Re: My new SDF surfboard Paipo
Uncle G, Thanks. There are indeed ties but the question of weighting has to be different, with someone with feet apart vs body weight. Rather than hijack Krusher's thread, I started a new thread on bottom turns, with 2 photos - a more conventional on rail turn and board barely in the water. I'd be i...

Bottom turns
Rather than hijack Krushers board design thread, here are a couple more bottom turn photos - the bottom photo doesn't have much board in the water at all

Well spotted. Was this on video/DVD or TV? I was wondering if a screen grab is possible

Skiff,
Thanks. I'm sure there are a lot of factors at play. I thought your earlier boards might have been thinner - looks like they just wider.

Re: Mega Platter Redux
Skiff, I wasn't thinking so much about real thin paipos but within your range of experimentation, I thought your earlier boards weren't as thick as the current one. I may just be wrong on this though. Either way, looks like you are catching some really fun waves. With thise long lines I can see whay...

Re: My new SDF surfboard Paipo
Krusher, Do you recall this specific wave? A nice wave & photo. My eye was drawn firstly to how much of the board was out of the water (it looks like just a tail corner is in the water) and then the wake - which is quite different to that in the photo at the top of the forum page (John Galera at...

Re: Mega Platter Redux
Skiff,
I was interested in how your boards go in hollow waves, because I have a feeling that sometimes a thicker board can handle hollow waves better than a really thin board. I'm not talking about HPD thin as Sean Ross has no trouble tube riding one.

Re: A Deeper Shade of Blue (one day only)
Oddly, I found the hydrofoil some of the most inspiring surfing. I think it was the capacity to ride unbroken swell and go so fast. I liked the historical material, but it seemed a bit over-produced for my liking. Still way more interesting than most surf films.

Re: Mega Platter Redux
Minor flotation addition would be my guess. Youcould also get away without padding the whole board. What is the light patch just below the door ahndle - some sort of hand grip? How do these thick boards ride in really hollow waves?

Re: El paipo
The more parallel rails of Krusher's example does suggest an earlier model. The planing machine ad is an interesting board - looks fairly modern.
It would be interesting to see the bottom - the fin might give more clues.

Re: El paipo
Krusher, El paipo were certainly in operation 1970-1972. Not sure if they existed before or after. It's difficult to get any detailed info on this era at Newport. Rod's rumage through magazine ads may yield updated info. It may be an earlier model because the shape is typically a bit more teardroppe...

Mr Mikes unidentified Mediterranea board
A while ago Poobah posted some photos of a board Mike purchased: see http://mypaipoboards.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=151#p1247 Photos were also on the old forum. I have been in contact with a Portuguese surfer Luiz Antonio Pereira (Ted) who said this style of board was exactly like a jacaré ...

Krusher,
I may have asked before. Any idea on the volume of your board? How much nose and tail lift does the board have?

Re: 1927 Portuguese surfing film
Interestingly to go back to Rod's comment about South Africa having earlier evidence of prone surfing, Magellan's route took him down the west coast of Africa & then with some stops across the mid-lower Pacifric.

Poobah,
I searched for this one but couldn't find it. Southbourne seems to be in the UK.

Reminds me of the story I heard about someone who paid a lot of money for an alleged ancient Papuan surfboard that someone else claimed was a table top.

1927 Portuguese surfing film
The conventional story is that surfing in Europe and elsewhere began with Americans bringing boards in th e1950s or exposure via films, books or magazines. Yet again, the evidence suggests that prone surfing was alive and well much earlier: http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/7917-old-portuguese-surf...
