Re: Xylem boards on sale

$229 with shipping is a good price. Cost for a 24" by 48" paulownia blank has got to be $75-100. My Malama Kai 47" is a great all-around board.

Re: Galapagos/ Ecuador

Atlanta,

Galapagos looks really interesting and is perhaps a place a spouse might be interested in seeing. See http://www.waterwaystravel.com/surf_ecuador/galapagos/
for package information. I have been happy with Waterways for travel to Samoa (4x) and El Salvador.

Finless Fiesta- Paipo and Alaia Class with Jon Wegener

For this unique workshop, we’ll be privileged to have Jon Wegener back from Southern California where he is a pioneer in the design and construction of traditional Hawaiian finless sticks. Each student will have their choice of building either a paipo or an alaia using paulownia with Jon guiding yo...

Re: Paipo hookups in 2013/2014?

I will be surfing on the Big Island from mid-January through mid-March, perhaps with side trips to Oahu and Maui. Keep an eye on the forecast and drop in at the last minute.

Re: Ab unexpected paipo hookup in Indo

I would be up for a trip to G-land. Maybe can schedule paipo hookups around the world.

Paipo hookups in 2013/2014?

Krusher,

Those are great photos! 27 days in G-land, sweet.

Re: Outside the Box

That guy is talented. The riding style is very paipo-like except for the hop turns. I especially like the nose-up sideways carving that would not be possible with skegs.

Re: Paipo volume and bouyancy

Flojo,

You should try to ride as many paipo as possible - some are all purpose, like Rod's higher volume Austin, but most feature quirks due to rider style or local conditions. If you get to the Big Island in the winter, you're welcome to try my boards.

Re: Paipo volume and bouyancy

Flojo, The Austin 50" (thinner than stock model), with 32# of buoyancy, is OK to duck dive. I am a lousy duck-diver and weigh 154#. The Malama Kai, with 21# of buoyancy, is easy to duck dive, but still has enough float for sitting on the board and resting. Buoyancy, in the range of 20-40#, invo...

Re: My new SDF surfboard Paipo

Krusher,

Pads are a good idea. I've considered gluing my 36" bodyboard to the top of my HPD for a Franken-paipo beast.

Re: My new SDF surfboard Paipo

Krusher, The surf in the video looks like fun. I am a similar bodyboard to paipo convert. The bodyboard is a really efficient vehicle for catching surf. Taking a no-paddle late drop on a floaty (e.g., Austin 50") paipo is similar to taking the same drop on a bodyboard - except the paipo is hard...

Re: Paipo volume and bouyancy

Bob, You understand the ideal procedure (fill vessel completely, completely submerge item, measure displaced volume by catching overflow or by measuring refill required). My procedure is complicated because the trashcan is too short to allow complete submersion of the board in one go. My description...

Re: Paipo volume and bouyancy

Bob, I filled a trash can with water and shoved a board in until it bottomed, marked the waterline on the board, refilled the trash can with a liter bottle, flipped the board over, dunked to waterline mark, refilled and added the two replacement volumes. The full dimensions of the boards are: Malama...

Paipo volume and bouyancy

I measured the displaced volumes and calculated the buoyancies (using seawater density 1.025 g/mL) of three boards: Austin 50", Malama Kai 47" and Hot Buttered 40.5" bodyboard. Malama Kai 47" displacement 13L mass 3.6 kg buoyancy 21.4 pounds Austin 50" displacement 18L mass ...
