Re: Board & Luggage Fees

Isn't that the truth, Ted! I will wear my full body 6/4 the next time I travel to N. Oregon!!! You are spot on about these new challenges. A lot of times I pack one pair of swim fins in my checked luggage back along with much of my other surf gear and also carry a pair of swim fins in the carry-on b...

Re: Oahu and the Big Island

That sounds great! I don't roll onto the Big Island until the evening of Sunday, Oct 30th and depart for home on Nov 8th. Looks like most mornings will be free and my two buddies and wife will be adjusting to the 6-hr time change but mornings will be easiest for them as well (except for Day 1 lol). ...

Re: Oahu and the Big Island

If the waves are at least 4ft Hawaiian at Makapu'u, you'll probably see some paipo boarders there. You'll have to take the skegs off that Austin, or surf before 9am or after 5pm though. Depending on swell and sand movement, check the Pupukea area; and you might like the rights off the Turtle Bay po...

Board & Luggage Fees

Moved here from "Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?" at: http://mypaipoboards.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=57 Over the years the board length has been partly a function of a few factors -- paddling ease (height of board should be about to the bottom of the sternum so the knees are n...

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

The standard off the rack baseline design is about 50 x 20.5 x 2.5. That can shape an 1/8 to 1/4 in. more narrower and/or thinner, depending upon someone's desire or more or less float, experience and the type of waves ridden. My Checkered RPM is 50 x 20 x 2.25, maybe a hair less than 20" wide ...

Re: Modifying UDT fins

John Hughes, a waveriding friend in Cocoa Beach, FL, recently told me how he reshaped his UDTs using a grinder and showed me the end product which looked very good. After reading this thread I asked him to send me the details which follow. "Hello Rod- I used a 4-1/2 in. Norton Rapid Strip wheel...

Oahu and the Big Island

I depart in 13 days and should have my toes in the sand and the tropical waters of Oahu just two weeks from today. I am staying on the northern end of the North Shore and just south of Kailua-Kona. Doubt there will be tons of paipo research going on -- at least the "formal" kind. More like...

Cuttlefish, can you post a couple of pics of the "curved fins" from a couple of different angles. What sizes are they?

My side bites on the Austin are very small (~2") and center fin these days is 4 or 4.5 in.

Re: Skegs

Slipping out can happen on those real slopey waves with my finned boards (e.g., Austin paipo). Funny feeling. Very easy to engage the fin(s) a split second later.

Re: Where to surf in Maui?

Probably more common than other areas especially at some of the local paipo spots on Oahu. Bodyboards / boogie boards and kneeboarding really took off but it seems that paipo/bellyboarding has increased the past decade. That is okay. Better to be a welcomed stranger in the water than a scorned one!

Re: Mini Pig

Austin will be building me a new Checkered RPM soon. It will have a light "S" deck as a function of my going to a slightly thinner board, around 2 inches, but needing some additional thickness in the tail for the fin boxes. Only a slight doming effect and the plan shape and rails will rema...

Re: Where to surf on Oahu

There are really a number of opportunities to ride surf on the North Shore area, and West Shore, if you mind your Ps & Qs. It would be a shame not to ride some of the reefs out there. I am not suggesting some of the focal points such as Pipeline -- too much of a zoo unless the weather is crappy ...

Re: Skegs

I am guessing your fin box layout is the same as below -- an industry standard Fins Unlimited center fin box in the middle and two FCS sidebite boxes (sometimes Austin uses Futures). For a 6 in or less center fin std box you can look for Fins Unlimited, True Ames or Rainbow Fin Company. Some of thes...

Andy, we should make a day trip down to OC/Assateague. Will try to squeeze it in some time over the next two months but I will be on travel status quite a bit. Putting on a wetsuit again in mid-November may kill me! Planning a short trip down to Hatteras -- something like Thu/Fri to Tue, Oct 8 weeke...

Rod Rodgers aka "rodndtube," a paipo boarder from Arbutus, MD. I started waveriding in Puerto Rico in the late-1960s. It was the natural thing to do since I lived on the Island for 9 years, 4th-12th grades. My current passion is combining travel and surf--Puerto Rico being my most frequent...
