Re: Bodyboards discuss (the soft paipo)

That was a really nice video. It looked like some advanced use of legs and swimfins in some of the early waves that were large and critical. Maybe everybody does it. I've never seen any photos or footage of myself and things move fast in the water so who knows. The guy made a comment about "get...

Re: Bodyboards discuss (the soft paipo)

That was indeed a fun read. I interviewed down there at the Roosevelt St. factory back in that era, 1978 if I remember correctly. I was looking for some kind of sales thing, had the interview set up, made the long drive down from Ventura County for an 8 a.m. interview with Clark Cederval (sp?)...had...

Ocean Mag July 2018

Ocean magazine has a page on Terry Hendricks and his hydrofoil bodyboard.

Apparently it's on display at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside.

Re: Bodyboards discuss (the soft paipo)

Higher end bodyboards now run just south of $300. Given the size relative to short boards for standup surfing the cost is roughly in line. Of course comparing things that way is probably fraught with peril. I suspect the bodyboard costs are distributed differently than with contemporary surfboard ma...

Re: Superman board design

Tell me about dreams, recently I had this weird dream I once read that motion dreams are really falling dreams, leftover genetic memories from the time we were monkeys in trees. It was either in that article or during that era, the 1970's, that I also read you can somehow harness the dreams; throug...

Re: my first paipo 44

I don't recall if you posted this info or if anyone asked...are you coating the aluminum with anything to protect against corrosion? The old aerospace industry worker in my has to ask since you've done all the work.

Re: Superman board design

So I wonder what kind of waves and / or boards require the superman stance ? I would guess that no waves actually "require" the Superman stance, which may be a reason this hasn't been more formally addressed as a "design issue". For me it's just something that is practically dre...

Re: Superman board design

Most of my boards are the long, narrow alaia type and the superman is my usual style. I've never made anything other than handboards out of "real" wood other than a mini paipo - the rest have been .25" birch ply. Maybe time for a summer project if I could just get caught up and recla...

Re: Superman board design

My wood paipos plane well enough but the width of the more traditional one makes it necessary to keep a hand on at least one rail (HPD guys will understand if that isn't clear) and the more marrow one is so thin I have to keep a hand on the nose to prevent a Flex/Pearl situation. Actually the one Ge...

Superman board design

Rather than hijack another thread...

If one was to design a board to ride like Superman...arms outstretched in front...what should it look like? Fins?

Re: my first paipo 44

for instance the "superman" stance doesn't work on a bodyboard. Too true. If by "superman stance" you mean arms outstretched in front...I must confess this is something I really enjoy. Throughout my life I have had occasional surfing dreams where it's a mix of surfing and flying...

Re: my first paipo 44

 Beautiful fins and I appreciate the craftsmanship (used to work in an aerospace metal spinning and sheet metal business)...but they look frigging deadly! Just looking at those blades make my nuts crawl up the back of my throat...

Re: The latest paipo intervews

I suppose I should, but at this point it would be less of an "update" and more of an "observation". I'm coming off a confounding extended period of health issues and a variety of other more outside influences that, taken together, remind me of the old Warren Zevon line "put ...

Re: The latest paipo intervews

Inspiring as always. Once again thank you Bob and Rod for the interviews. Not that you guys need any more work, but the thought crossed my mind the other day that it might be interesting to revisit or solicit updates from people. Time passes and things change. Always interesting to see pathways... N...

Re: 8ft waves with wind paipo?

Nobody has done anything like that at least for prone craft to my knowledge. Waveskate and probably others have carried concave to the point of "pontoon" like features on the rails, the opposite of this. This looks like my kayak too, and that rides waves. With no science or trial and error...

Were there not experiments with milder "nose V" in Hawaii back in the day? Perhaps for same reason?

Re: Bodyboards discuss (the soft paipo)

I believe the carbon mesh and stringers both have some flex and recoil...both are there to stiffen the board and protect from creasing (bodyboard version of breaking). As to the shape I think a clue may come from the model name: Soap Bar. Looks inspired by the Tyler Warren Bar of Soap model, itself ...

Re: TBG5

Windsurfing is pretty near dead around me, couldn't tell you the last time I saw a windsurfer. Everything is kitesurfing. Until these posts I literally have never seen that particular 2 + 2 fin configuration.

Of course I'm a surf-hermit so that probably isn't good for expanding the horizons...

Re: my first paipo 44

Huh...lot of food for thought but after a fast pass this morning on my way to who knows what the thought I had was twin fins for paipos...larger fins the closer to the centerline, smaller near the rails...to allow for wider tail width of paipos. Seems like there should be some kind of mathematical f...
