Re: Oahu

By the way, I wouldn't tell the wrong guy in Santa Cruz that he isn't a "Norcal" surfer. Marin County is infamous worldwide as a haven for rich sh*t-for-brains. Stinson and Bolinas can have really decent summer surf and can even pick up a south swell (which you would know if you new anyth...

HAHAHAHAHAHA, they forgot to put Santa Barbara in there! even still, its all better than the west coast hillbilly state, 8-) Maybe you should read the entire article: In 1900, the Los Angeles Times defined Southern California as including "the seven counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardi...

Not so. I prefer Northern California wine, most often Marietta Vineyard's Old Vine Red and sparkling wine from the Alexander Valley. ;)

Re: Oahu

This geographical argument about the Central Coast is an old one. Here is just one of many articles that back up this Santa Barbaraian's contention. http://california-vineyards.com/pdfs/Central_Coast_Fact_Sheet.pdf Marketing hype by some wine industry advertising droids doesn't mean jack. Re: Oahu

Being born and raised and having lived my entire life in Northern California we always considered anything Malibu or the canyons south to be Southern California. Central California ended at Monterey. Monterey and north is Northern California. The Central Coast starts at Point Conception anything so...

Re: Swim fins/flippers

Orange dot Vipers for either crappy East Coast surf or dropping in on critical reef breaks in warm water. The XL's can't be worn with booties in the PNW as they are too small. Unmodified UDT's for the big stuff. Nothing beats full power thigh strokes for getting up to speed in order to catch long pe...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market

Jim, I have not been seeing common references to the term "bellyboard" prior to the early- to mid-1960s. Please sent me some references! Look at your own site and especially surf research au. The different prone machines going back a century are referred to in many of the listings (among ...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market

There are several references to body-board surfing in Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and elsewhere in Oceania. [See: Finney, Ben R. 1959. Hawaiian surfing, a study of cultural change. ] Just as I predicted. Some obscure reference in a book no one has read. The fact of the matter is "bellyboard&qu...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market

Sorry, but the term bodyboard pre-dates the invention of the boogie board by Tom Morey in 1971. Bullshit. I've been surfing since the 1950's and nobody used the term before the the boogie boom despite what authorities whom you might have talked to might have "recalled." And even if some d...

Bodyboard is a term invented by the marketing droids of the "action sports industry" to describe their knock offs (and improvements) of the Morey boogieboard.

Bodyboard = booger. Period.

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market

To me, I have used 3 categories of prone vehicles: 1) bodyboard - sponge 2) bellyboard - foam & glass; buoyant 3) paipo - neutrally buoyant board that is not a sponge or mini surfboard ^^^This for sure, and category 3 should cover everything down to but not necessarily including handboards (alt...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

The fundamental point is that a proper, and by that I mean finless and super thin, paipo has absolutely nothing to do with a surfboard. Paipo boarding is an extension of bodysurfing. A dead flat planing surface with possibly some slight upturn or spoon in the nose to prevent pearling is what is requ...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market

For any number of reasons the terms paipo and belly board are probably indistinguishable. Not to me they aren't. This distinction was what was actually prevalent in the 1960's: A paipo is thin and skegless. A bellyboard is like the Austin that you ride. Thick and foamy with fins sticking out the bo...
