Re: Something different or not?

Here a good table that gives the properties (including density) of various plastic materials http://www.machinist-materials.com/comparison_table_for_plastics.htm The "KingStarboard" stuff seems like it would be fun to experiment with. I'm going to ask some friends in the boat biz if I can ...

Re: Something different or not?

When I was in high school ( a long time ago), I made a lot of handboards (aka handplanes today) in industrial arts class out of plexi-glass or polycarbonate type plastics. I used the school shop oven or my home oven to bend concaves or rail fins into them. I also knew a guy around that time that mad...

Re: hello from a new paipoboard rider

Welcome. Its been long proven that you can ride just about any shape of 3/8" - 3/4" plywood. However, my experience has been the "triangular" shaped boards are the most versatile performance/ maneuverability wise. With this style board, I found it made a big difference how the re...

Re: Holiday Greetings

^Nothing beyond some small talk, it was a very brief session for me. I got the "you should have been here last week/ yesterday" story. Cool seeing that guy still out there charging. He was fixture at Makapu'u when I first started surfing as a kid, and I consider myself an old guy now.

Re: Swim fins/flippers

I've been using Viper V-5 yellow dots for the last 2 years I've gotten back into riding paipos. I agree with Rod's comments about the noticeable difference when using the yellow & orange dot fins in different climates. I find the yellow dots work well in the water temps I usually surf (mid 50's ...

Re: Oahu

If you could exclude the crowds/traffic/ petty crime/ etc. factors, O'ahu would win for sure because of the high concentration of accessible high quality surf spots. Throw those factors back in and O'ahu isn't first place in my book. Things have definitely changed there (mostly for the worse) or bec...

If anyone is planning on surfing the the San Francisco or North San Mateo County areas, I have a few home built plywood paipos I'd be happy to share.

Re: Holiday Greetings

A belated Mele Kalikimaka to everyone, and Hau'oli Makahiki Hou. I'm on O'ahu now, but family commitments will probably keep me barred from surfing most of the trip. I did manage to sneak in a quick 20 min paipo session at Makapu'u today. The waves were only 1-3, and just barely breaking on the outs...

Royal Richards 2011 Paepo contest - Any pics??

Looks like they ran the contest last month at Panics / Flys in 3-5 ft Hawaiian size waves. Anyone know if there's any Paepo pics or vids from that day?? I've only found some from the bodysurfing heats on the Greg Rice Imagery site. Talk about keeping a sport underground!

Re: Oahu and the Big Island

Yeah, the rule applies outside or inside. If there's swell, the spot next door "Suicides" can be fun too. Solid wave, but not anywhere as sketchy as the name makes it sound by island standards. If there's a big North wrap swell, you can try to get a boat ride to surf Rabbit Island, or make...

Re: Oahu and the Big Island

If the waves are at least 4ft Hawaiian at Makapu'u, you'll probably see some paipo boarders there. You'll have to take the skegs off that Austin, or surf before 9am or after 5pm though. Depending on swell and sand movement, check the Pupukea area; and you might like the rights off the Turtle Bay poo...

Re: Where to surf on Oahu

SJB: I'll likely be on O'ahu visiting family during the holidays. Don't know how much time I'll have to surf, but I can give you some info before your trip, and while you're there. Send me a PM if you want. I grew up in Kailua too. There's a far paddle reef spot in front of the "Moks" - Mo...
