Re: My lates Wing board
Hi Chris and Bob, I had a few conversations with Terry about surfing speed and it's clear that there are two speeds, speed thru the water and speed across the land. F'instance an almost vertical drop would be a very high acceleration thought the water but a GPS wouldn't register any speed at all. Al...

Re: My lates Wing board
Here's the basic foil. Just 3 ply with 1 layer of 10 oz glass on both sides. image.jpg image.jpg You can see that it's really low volume. One of the principles I Follow us that displacement slows a board or a foil down. The bigger the volume of the object, the greater the volume of water it needs to...

Re: My lates Wing board
Quote CRISPI..." . it can be difficult to be certain all this complexity is improving riding a wave,we all have differnt goals on a wave..." Yes I've also thought about the purpose / worth / validity of foiling. Do foils improve wave riding ? An improvement is not just bigger/ higher/ fast...

Re: My lates Wing board
Here's another foil board I found on the net but I think it was his only one. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg And if you want to read the bible of prone foiling in 2003, it's here by Terry Hendricks. http://mypaipoboards.org/hydrofoil/paipo_hydrofoil.shtml Sadly Terry isn't with us anymore, however if...

Re: My lates Wing board
Hi guys, Chris, the plastic bag is polyethylene, it's very cheap stuff, I'm using 240 litre OTTO bin liners, the plastic crinkles when you scrunch it and it just doesn't stick to resin at all, never. They're about 50c each. The other type of plastic garbage bag is polyester which doesn't work. I'm h...

Re: My lates Wing board
Glassings a breeze... Using a small vac pump and a plastic bag, image.jpg I cut a piece of glass for either side of the ply, image.jpg wet both sides out with epoxy resin image.jpg and put all that in a plastic bag with a tube that connects to the pump. image.jpg The pump sucks the air out of the ba...

Re: My lates Wing board
CSM - chop strand mat, is like shredded wheat fibreglass, used a lot in boating Your description of your foil sounds cool. Can't wait to check it out !! Here's my project with 10 degrees of Anhedral, only 3 mm ply but I'll vac bag a few layers of 6 oz on both sides and then sand it down. I'm keeping...

Re: My lates Wing board
Chris, that board is looking fantastic ! Are you using CSM, and / or vac bagging ?
It looks like you're a metal worker but your boards always look really professionally finished.
Are you foiling your foils or leaving them as a flat plate ?

Re: My lates Wing board
Hi Chris, I use 0 degrees because then the hull of the board and the foil are parallel. So water can flow between both surfaces without being blocked or trapped. If you're paddling and the board is at the optimum angle for speed, so should the foil so it's neither digging of pushing water. I have tr...

Re: Morey's the one
Not a lot of rocker. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg The rails are quite low and feel good in the front but at the back he's gone for an angular bodyboard rail and it has no hold at all, especially when you put the board on its rail. You can surf it standing up but have to do 'flat' turns be...

Re: Morey's the one
Bob, having bought one, I'm poorer for the expense and the experience. It seems the materials were the main prompt to create a hybrid board that could I be ridden in the U.S. where hard surfboards were banned but as a prone craft it's a bit of a FAIL. The outline isn't something that lends itself to...

Bob, I bought one of those from eBay a few years ago. It had this complex fin system on it.
Still got it if you want to borrow it ?

Chris, that first pic you posted of the evolution of your boards was a real eye opener. Looking forward to seeing your next board. When are you starting the build ?

Re: My lates Wing board
Now with a flat foil when you turn, a lot more of your weight is now on one side of the foil. image.jpg If the foil has an Anhedral or downward tip then it already returns less than perfect lift but when you turn the tip angle will have a greater downward angle. Here's my lateral Spitfire Anhedral f...

Re: My lates Wing board
Nice work with the foils Chris, I also did some foiling with the modern Laser class. Amazingly better on foils than the old boat but the twin foils are a devil to balance, it's the most defining moment I had in foil design where I'd laboured for years following sail boat foil design, following aerop...

Re: My lates Wing board
Soul glider, imagine if we could all get together and swap boards, that would be a great day. So very odd that David Tomasettis doing foils in the U.S, Chris is doings foils in South Africa and I'm doing them in Australia. Yet none of us started the other off, we all independently are doing our own ...

Re: My lates Wing board
Hopefully if I share what I know then you other guys will do the same and we can keep this thread moving. Or we can let it die. I'm keen to talk foil theory but here's a look at a retro zombie board I'm going to ride tomorrow, with the old wood and rubber topped board, new black square struts and a ...
