I thought it was funny when he said his early design didn't work because it "lifted right out of the water".

Velzy first did a V (AKA Butterfly) fin way back when he was working with Hap Jacobs and was still working with them off and on into the 80's .



It was only a matter of time until some "innovator" added a third fin and I'm not certain this "quantum" is the first one...

On a related note, we recently had a board donated to SHACC that has 7 fin boxes.

I would see the "innovation" more as the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling to determine foil, template and AOA of all fins, instead of trial-and-error. Recently others, WaveGrinder to name one, have used a similar hi-tech approach to design fins. Wilkes has over 30yr surfing/shaping experience, and combining that with the hi-tech guys he's working with adds up to a pretty competent design team. Priced at US$170, fin may be slow to catch on.

Got a very similar fin from Dale Velzy when he was still alive
and confirm that this style fin was originally a work design of Dale and Hap
Was wondering if a three fin version would not be too much drag when installed

I think FCS/futures might have something to say about there being no change in fin tech in the last 34 years.

When a company throughs out statements like that I tend to throw them in the pool with politicians.

Seems like a lot of torque from a 3-fin-unifin on a single fin box. Keith, you are spot-on about the claim of the first fin innovation in 30 yrs.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record. and/or shouting in the wilderness…take a look at the original , 3 fin Bonzer…first developed in 1970 by the Campbell Bros, and their dad Jack Campbell.
You may see some design/conceptual similarities...
