Paipo Gathering in San Simeon Aug 3-5, 2012

Kim (kage) and I have been informally talking about camping out at Plaskett Campground, Big Sur (CHANGED to Heart San Simeon State Park), in early August. The weekend of opportunity for me is Fri-Mon, Aug 3-6. Plenty of sites are still available to advance reservations and as Dr. Robert Moynier says below there are also many lodging options as well.

Any interest for other paipo people here on the forums?

I could probably make the long journey..another alternative is San Simeon campground 45 minutes south of Plaskett.
It offers both tent and "primitive " sites, and for those who prefer more civilized accomodations, both San Simeon and Cambria offer hotels, motels, and B&B's that range from creepy to really nice.
The other thing is there are way more surf spots to choose from as compared to Plaskett, but that may be incidental.
Last years gathering was sparsely attended, but there were some really cool boards on display, and some amazing people too
so, count me in!

Jbw, We have has some pretty bad luck in the past for waves, third time is a charm maybe?

Other mid coast suggestions would be appreciated, particularly if they are (a.) On the beach and (b.)Not horrendously windy. Doc., I think you may be the authority in the area, so please suggest away. The option of indoor accommodations will attract some I am sure. Though there are those like Soulglider who just love camping ;).

Robert, the San Simeon campground might be an option -- what is the "official name" or better yet, a link for more info?

P.S. There are also some amazing sea creatures in that area!

Official name is Hearst San Simeon State Park..805 927 2020.
Or google Calif' State Parks and check it out..it is a great place w/2 different camping area's, lots of trails and just on the other side of HWY 1.Easy walk to the beach along San Simeon creek..good surf in front upon occasion, but plenty surf spots w/in a 3-4 mile radius north and south.
August can be a good one..a couple of our best quality spots love the summer south, and can hold size..last August saw one of the better swells in a long time w/a 3-5 day blitz of long distance south, glassy overcast conditions.
Paipo madness for sure.
Wind (apart from a sometimes early morning south that backs off mid morning) is not usually a factor that time of year.
Fog can be.
Amazing sea creatures?
Uhmmn, well yes, we have tons of sea otters, and the odd seal or two.
Apart from that ,I'm usually in the water 3-4 times a week

There are sites available on that weekend. Plaskett is my fave, but we can't get a reservation. I vote 'switch'. Opinions?

Is this the creature you were looking for?

I vote switch as well if there is reservation availability. I would prefer a park at campsite rather than a hike-in site. Did you call or do you see an on-line availability website? Uh, I see it now:

Heart San Simeon is ON! Kim Green is reserving a spot for the two of us and our two tents. Individual campsites allow up to two cars and 8 people (there is over flow vehicle parking nearby). The camp service assigns spots -- guess we might be able to ask in advance or upon arrival to try putting us in close proximity.

Dr. Robert showed me quite a few nice surfing spots in the area. Looking forward to it!

San Simeon State Park is a way better venue for something like this than Plaskett. I live in the area and I think the group will have far better chances of success finding suitable surf in the SS area. Like Dr. Robert says, lots of good choices in a small area, and they're the types of waves I think this group will enjoy. August is considered 'Prime Time', and you couldn't have picked a better window. The park itself, despite being close to Cambria, has a decided rural feel, and I think it's a fantastic choice. It's really one of the outright gems along our stretch of the coast. See you all there, it's on the calendar and I'm looking forward to it.

Ted tells me he will be attending. Who else plans to join us?

Ted is coming all the way from Hawaii? Wow! That's commitment.
Other than that I am hearing a lot of crickets. Not a lot of interest from the old guard.
Tired? Water too cold? Flipper stuck in the door?

Hi,

I am planning on attending. I guess I should reserve a camping spot. I am still trying to decide on my exact schedule.

I reserved a spot for 8/3-8/5/2012!!!!!!! There are 31 campsites left. California campsites book up. So if want a site you better do it soon.

Robert Moynier passed along some information on alternative "lodging" for those who might be adverse to camping out. Looks rather nice to me.:

Hi guys,
here's a cool place in town run by some friends of mine (serious water people).. $70 a night, can have up to 3 people.. might work for some of the Paipo people who are not into camping at the San Simeon paipo fest. See: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/210853
Surf on!

What kind of water temps and air temps can be reasonably expected in early August in the San Simeon area? I need to figure out what kind of rubber to bring.

Hey there..
H2o should be in the upper 50's, with air temps 10+ degrees higher.
A 4/3 suit will certainly do the trick..lighter is fine too particularly with booties and a hood.
Hope to see a pile of paipo's in early August..would love to see the different design approaches in action!
Surf On.
