Re: A Deeper Shade of Blue (one day only)
Jack McCoy spoke at the Surfing Heritage last night and he had some snippets of the movie as well.
I'm seeing the entire film at a sneek preview tomorrow night and from what I have already seen it is going to one of the best surf films ever.
Check out the website and please go see this film on the big screen, the way surf films should be seen.
You will not regret it.

Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?

I'm excited. This looks more historical than the usual surf porn (which, like real porn, is great but not for 90 minutes).
Believe it or not, this movie is playing all over Atlanta, a place not usually associated with the sport of kings.
When are we paipo kooks getting our own movie? When I saw the part in Come Hell or High Water when he made a small plywood paipo, I was hooting and hollering.

I enjoyed the film immensely. Great cinematography. The underwater filming providing a great perspective for viewing the plan shape of the board upon the wave and the interaction of the rails and skegs with the wave -- this I would like to see again on DVD on a good screen with pause, slow-motion, rewinds... all those bells and whistles to take some closer looks. The Hawaiian premier footage before and after the film was interesting but not something I would look for when watching the DVD very often. I will go out on a limb with a posting on fins (skegs) elsewhere.

Oddly, I found the hydrofoil some of the most inspiring surfing. I think it was the capacity to ride unbroken swell and go so fast. I liked the historical material, but it seemed a bit over-produced for my liking. Still way more interesting than most surf films.
