Hola All,
I'm Eric, born and raised in Encinitas but have recently relocated to the central coast (Pismo area). I have been riding waves one way or another my whole life - but have only recently rediscovered the joys of riding prone - a couple years ago I was at the beach with my kids and the waves were pretty small (maybe 2 ft) and all I had was a short board with me but the kids were having a blast on bodyboards in the shore break so I grabbed one and joined them and it brought back that amazing stoke of yesteryear and I was grinning like an idiot- and since then I am pretty much of the "if it slides it rides" philosophy and ride anything from handplanes to paipos to mats to whatever. Planning on making a couple of my own paipos and handplanes (and from what I've read on this forum there is an abundance of resource and information here- not to mention a great group of people). If you find yourself in the central coast area hit me up.

I understand there is a bit of paipo boarding around the Pismo Pier influenced by some of the foam/glass boards a local shaper was making. Also some of the regulars on the forums that ride north of you.

Yeah, I have seen a few around - fairly new to the area but there appears to be a couple guys around. Appearantly, a local shaper Pat Flecky (whom I'm sad to report passed away a couple years ago) was making paipo boards of the foam/glass variety.

Thanks, will do. Actually just went down this last weekend to hit up the "Fun in the Sun Expression Sessions" at Beacons, which was a blast - Wegener, Whomp, Brown Fish and others all brought a bunch of paipo, handplanes, alai, surf mats, etc - still wearing the stoke.

Brink down in Southern Calif. makes some fiberglass/foam and more up your way is Malcom Campbell (paipo bonzers). Lots of other glass/foam shapers as well but those two are probably the most involved on the SoCal/CentCal coast.

Hello to all, Jimmy here - stole my screen name from Bruce Springsteen's "Lost in the Flood"
I started surfing in 1977 in Florida on single fins, transitioning to twin fins and eventually thrusters/longboards and others for the next 30 some years.

I always remembered when I was learning seeing older dudes on kneeboards just killing it when it was good, they always intrigued me. In 2007 I talked to Bruce Hart @ Flashpoint and got a kneeboard and started riding that too- very cool, the sense of speed is enhanced being closer to the water. I actually found some good info about swim fins from some of the guys on this forum. Picked up a couple 4G surfmats and have tried riding those, I figured I would try a paipo, so I will probably ask some questions.
I surf the OBX and take a trip or 2 a year to Central America

You might run into a Tidewater area guy who frequents the Outer Banks -- probably does most of his surfriding in Waves -- he has an Austin paipo and probably a couple of other boards as I recall. I usually make it down to Hatteras once or twice a year... hopefully for a few days in August, but will miss out on my usual week in early September. I've also been known to trip down to Central America once or twice a year :)

Hi, just recently got interested in paipo. Started stand up surfing in '76 then in my 20s took 25 yrs off, been back at it past few yrs ,, but thought paipo might be a great way to get more fun out of our Texas gulf coast waves. It bad way more often than good. mostly local wind swells , and occasional hurricane or TD in that season.
Ive been lurking a few days and already have learned.
thanks

Hi Paipo riders,
my name is Patrick Boothman I live in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, UK. I am a newcomer to paipos and have only been riding them for the last three or four years. The last 18months had been exclusively paipo ridden. I used to surf traditional PU boards but after shaping a paulownia alaia discovered a whole new world of fun. I have shaped several paulownia paipo and make "art pieces" that I do not ever expect to see the water. My current predicament is trying to source paulownia in the UK. I am a self employed artists/shaper at http://www.sawboards.co.uk.

Aloha Paipo Riders,

My name is Jarrett K. Liu from Kaimuki,O`ahu. I've been riding multiple sizes of paipo (Papa Paepo`o) boards around Hawaii`i. Now I'm shaping my own style and shapes for my bodysurfing buddies and others who love to have there very own Paipo (Papa Paepo`o).My boards are made from mahogany wood with variable sizes that has nose rocker with a nose-contour. Boards height ranges from 32"- 50"inches, variable ranges in width 17"nose, mid 21", tail 19" . I just add or minus 2"inches of board per board design. Every boards has its own top deck (pattern) and the bottom deck had Hawaiian Prints (100% cotton material) that is laid under a 6oz. S-cloth on the bottom and 6oz. S-cloth for the top deck. Epoxy resin is used. These boards are finless and rides in "HIGH" surf meaning Makaha surf of 6'-8'ft surf to east-side 3'-4'ft. with no problem. Bottom tail does not whip-out while making the bottom turn, boards has a slight weight to give the rider a forward motion of getting the board down quicker on the face (drops). Boards are capable of riding with the riders control because of it's narrow midway to tail.
These are my style and boards......

Hi everyone,
I am James. I have been surfing for about 20 years. I am a very big guy and have always been. I have been riding longboards mostly but, recently have been trying new shapes and sizes. I sold all of my longboards except one 10' pearson arrow that I still ride from time to time. When the surf is decent I have been riding a 7'10" dewey weber feather fastback or an Infintiy 7'6" Big Tex. My step-daughter wanted to start learning to surf last summer but, my step son decided he would rather be a bodyboarder. Well, that brought back a bunch of great summer memories from when I was a kid so i got a cheapo 44" board and some fins. We have been having a blast! He and I even decided to try bodysurfing one day. We had so much fun we decided to make a handplane. We upcycled an old Ikea shelf and it more or less works fine. We were surprised at how much the ugly little Ikea handplane helps. Plus, at a time when my stoke was almost gone and I was bored with the whole scene I am completely stoked with a new found simplicity and excitement. Watching the kids discover their stoke and learning new things every time we paddle or kick out has made me super stoked. We usually surf Bolsa Chica or the cliffs in Huntington and in the summer we camp a lot at San O trail 6.
Lately, I have been looking at better quality bodyboards and then I found this forum and have become focused on bellyboards and paipos. Also found an awesome handplane on craigslist but, of course the surf has disappeared since I bought it. Hope the forecast is right for next weekend so i can try it out. I think me and the boy might try and make a simple paipo in the next couple of weeks from plywood and I am for sure looking for someone to make me a bellyboard. I have been looking for a used one but, it's tough to find something that will fit me. I will probably have one made at some point. I wonder if a small mini simmons might work for me??
Anyway, that's the abridged version. See you in the water.

Hey everyone. My name is Paul and its good to be on the forum. Well this prone surfing started over the summer for me. There was a paipo demo at beacons one day so I decided to check it out. I was out for a couple hours trying some boards but there was something missing. I needed more float because I'm a big guy. And remembered seeing Thomas Patrick post bellyboards on his blog so I got one from him. Now I also kneeboard so I was switching back and forth between the two. I really enjoyed the bellyboard because I was getting some new sensations that I haven't felt. But it didn't work for me on smaller slower days. So I started riding my kneeboard prone on those days but at 5'9" its a bit to long. A year or so ago I had taken a shaping lesson and shaped a board. Right now I'm planing on shaping abellyboard in the next few weeks. I'll see if I can do build thread on that. Anyway sorry for rambling on.

Paul
