Hawaiian Pull-Out

Unread post by JJJ » Sun Nov 02, 2014 1:22 am

Aloha MPB Forum. First post, but been lurking on the website for a while...

In the Paipo Interview with Rainer Stegemann, he talks about the "Hawaiian pull-out" where your pearl the nose of the paipo and pull yourself out of the back of the wave. I did this by accident a few times and realized that it is a really clean way to exit the wave. My usual way to pull out of the wave was to yank on my outside rail and punch through the face of the wave head-first before the wave sectioned off or closed out; I still do this. But by pearling the nose on purpose I find that the board "submarines" (rather than crash and burn like a surfboard) and I can maneuver the board under water to kick out the back while the wave's vortex goes over me.

I ride the HPD XL & Monster boards, so maybe that is a factor? I can count the times I've seen other paipos on the water on one hand, so my experience is through trial and error.

I haven't done this in sizable waves, only smaller stuff. Does anyone have any tips or pointers?

JJJ, the same maneuver works for me. Learned the name much later! Must say my regular foot/right-handedness makes it much easier going right then going left. My boards are poly foam/glass and thus more buoyant than an HPD but is works well.

JJJ, are you in Kailu Kona? Nice area.

Have not done this in BIG waves but you can sure stay in the wave longer, to the bitter end, and still get out clean. Most of the time.

Just be mindful of the bottom! :o :o :o
