Another "Blast from the past..."

HobieCutDown09_small.JPG
Last month (Aug, 2012) a guy brought this board into the shop. It's a Hobie "paipo" circa 1969. I was lucky enough to discuss this board with its shaper that very same day! For more pix and the full story go here:

I couldn't get the link to work even after logging in to Google.
Unusual board.
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?

Great find! You can "see" the longboard blank in the shape of both of these.

Excellent story and documenting of the story, Thomas! Amazing to have so much info on the building of the board and skegs and the materials used. Also thanks for adding your detailed measurements in the blog post.

Thanks. I saw it as a rare opportunity and didn't want to leave any stone un-turned. Danny, the shaper/glasser was so gracious and patiently answered all of our questions. (Later he wrote Ray, thanking him for the opportunity to see the Hobie Paipo). I was taking notes and shooting photos like crazy. The paipo's owner was very interested in what the board might be worth. I'm a big fan of the Surfing Heritage Museum, in San Clemente, CA, and suggested he "loan" the board to them so that others could enjoy it. I hope he followed my suggestion.

I was at LAX tonight picking up my Sister in law and had to kill a little time. I did some surfing on my phone and made my usual stops, TPs blog being one of them and got to see and read about this old paipo. Very cool! Nice job TP. :D

Nomastomas,

Great story. What was Danny's background in paipo that was referred to on your blog?

The other interesting thing, is looking at the profile on Poobah's photos - the sister boards is nice and thin, though the thickness is further forward than on boards like Larry Goddards. It would also be interesting to see how it surfed.

Not sure...one of those questions I forgot to ask. Danny is in his 70s and has a pretty solid shaper/surfer pedigree. Google "Danny Tarampi" and see what you come up with.

Anyone know what the design rationale was behind those ultra thick, no-foiled skegs?

Fin design tended to be rather primitive until the mid- to late-1960s. Greenough helped revolutionize fin design along with many others. So, for the time period, a fin's function was to provide directional stability. Hard to believe that only 15 years earlier the "fin" innovation was the design of the hot curl surfboard which was basically a V-bottom shape to act like a fin. A great source for more info on the Hot Curl and other things surfing is in the book by Kelly, John M. 1965. Surf and Sea. New York: A.S. Barnes.

I did a web search on Danny Tarampi, which kept bringing up similar information, that was recycled over various sites.

Is there an e-mail address I can try and I'll contact him.

bg...Sorry, I don't have his email and don't know if he has access to email. I don't know how to contact him. I think he lives in Oxnard or Ventura, CA.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and used to go hang out at Danny's surf shop after school. If I remember correctly, the name of his shop was Guenther Glass.

Spudnut,

How long ago was this? I've done a few searches for Gunther Glass, but not found anything current.

Hi Bob,

I think we would be talking in the early 1970's. His shop closed in the later part of the decade. He was really nice to us kids!

Hello Spudnut,

Thanks. Uncle G sent me some info which fits with the timeframe you mentioned. What Tarampi's connection to paipos is remains a mystery.

I do not remember paipos at his shop in Reseda. But then again I was between 10 and 14 wanting to use a surfboard, so ... :|
