Help me shape this board

Unread post by PaipoRick »

It's a piece of local paulownia, which they call princess tree here in NC. Anyway, it's 1" thick. The short side in the picture is 38" long, the long side is 48". Width is around 17". The edges taper a little due to the log it was cut from. I got this from a friend who builds furniture. The wood is rough and will need a trip through a planer, which we have at work.

Anyway, I'd like to keep this as one solid piece of wood. For a shape I was going to square the tail off, make the rails sort of parallel, and round off the nose a bit. I'd like to keep this as one solid section.

Sounds like a plan. Once it's been through the planer it will be clearer what you have to work with, e.g thickness. You might like to consider a tail block if you are sticking with a single piece of wood.
