Hi guys, Chris, good idea about GPS in a wave pool.
Here's my beast, got the twin stringers locked in.
image.jpg
I was going to leave the rails square but I've given in to a bit if hydrodynamics, aesthetics and a square rail doesn't sit under the armpit very comfortably.
image.jpg
I've used a 1 " high square rail with an angle to the deck before and it's functional and very easy to shape.

Not really going to need functional rails on a hydrofoil am I ?!
image.jpg
It's just a smigden over 2 kgs but I've yet to glass and veneer the deck and hull.

I think I needed more strength especially for standup foiling..
Previously I've use a standard foam bodyboard and bolted wooden strips to both sides but it looks ugly so this time I've hidden the stringers insider the board, once it's glassed people won't know they're there.
Once you're foiling above the water the only thing holding you up is the strut or mount and the downward force on both sides I s likely to snap the board without enough longitudinal strength. That's why I sometimes use two inline 'front and back' struts.

And a quick spray coat around the rails that won't have veneer.

Hi Brett,
Your board is looking good, I have shots of my board in under coat, and it shows the shine lines nicely. I have been thinking with the Anhedral on my foils when dose so called ground effects start acting, how fast can you go on a cushion of air?

Chris,yours is a work of art !
I think you'll find the ground effect would only work on flat water and at over 100 kph. Nice thought tho !
If you wNt to talk about a 'cushion of air', surfmats are pretty close but they have fatal flaws too.

Hi Brett,
Thanks for the complements they are encouraging, don’t be so hard on your own work there is nothing wrong with it, I heard a lot of people doing projects like we do, get discouraged because the intense scrutiny on the project makes you see all the small and mostly insignificant flaws, sometimes you need to step away and clear your head
I started my love for surfing on hire surfmats back in the day

HI guys,,
I've been following along but haven't had anything worthwhile to contribute..
Chris ,that board is so cool,, it must be a real pain to glass and sand between the board and the wing..
how many layers of cloth did you use on the wing part?
For the torsion box did you just use a higher density foam , or did you add glass inside too?
Did you decide on a color scheme yet?

Brett, I like the idea of just using lumber to create the stringers and mounts, but I had a nightmare about the wood breaking under load and creating some very pointy stakes that were pointed at my midsection..
It is much less of a probability with your design with a front and back strut, than with mine with the single load point way up front and all of that leverage..
I finally got my new board adapted for the foil and it's ready to go..

If the shape works well I will try to make the next board built around a wooden substructure running down the center.

Hi Guys,
The torsion box is 7mm Airex core foam,500 cm long strips on their edge with two layers of 6oz cloth between each layer about 15 layers thick, lit but very strong . The foil is 6oz cloth with Airex box beams and micro balloons as filler. I finish the foil lose and then epoxy it to the torsion box, I am lucky I love sanding and shaping it relaxes me

Rod, Yes Tom did a great job on this board,I couldn't be happier with it.
I got the opportunity to try it out before I butchered it in some chest high glass and it paddled really well and went like greased pigshite..
which of course made me feel even more torn about gutting it , but that was it's original purpose, so gut it I did..

Surfersensei and I will be giving it a try tomorrow morning ( he's also going to bring his zylem paipo for me to try).
I will be bringing my go pro so there might be a few pics or video but the surf is not expected to be too impressive..

Chris, thanks for the info on your construction techniques , your boards are really works of art.
I too enjoy working with the foam, but after years of grinding and sanding nearly everyday for a living, the more tedious finish work is literally a pain in the neck for me..
I'm looking forward to hearing how this new design works for you..

Wooddave, good to see you're getting Surfersensei off the paddleboard and back into the water ;) Enjoy the Xylem.

Between the professional boards and foils from Dave and Chris, I look like a fool, so I'm out of the race !
I'm going back to painting the house and mowing the lawns.

Wooddave,
This to me is the most exciting part of the prose’s the anticipation, of the first ride on a new board. Have fun and post pictures as soon as possible, but I must admit having a camera to handle on a new board can be very distracting

Brett,
I am shore the wife will be happy, but it is not that easy to walk away from an obsession like this. And I think most independent free thinkers have self doubt. I always remember the early ornithopter flying projects, and now we are talking about swarms of flapping drones doing all sorts of useful stuff

I don't think Brett will be doing too much mowing. Sounded like Oz self-deprecation-humour plus a nod to your work.

I have been looking at the board to long, my insecurity convinced me fit a removable fin; I started with an aluminium root inlay sandwiched between two layers of Airex foam. I am beginning to like Airex

Hi surf Afflicted,
The board has had its final sanding 130 and degrease , ready for paint, black, white and grey .Colure and lay out is the hardest issue to finales, but when the decision is made I need to act fast otherwise doubt sets in
