Fish: The Surfboard Documentary

This flick is up on Amazon and is a pretty cool account of how the shape evolved from bodysurfing, paipo, and knee riding as very much an alternative wave riding vehicle.

That will be a nice follow-up to the printed story appearing in Cher Pendarvis's article in The Surfing Journal a few years ago: Pendarvis, Cher. (2011, Feb-Mar). Home Grown: Steve Lis and His Fish. The Surfer’s Journal, 20(1), 108-119. Article summary: It was only one of the most influential developments in surfboard design, no big deal. From his quiet perch above Sunset Cliffs, emerged Steve Lis and this unabridged Fish story. Paipo bottom turn storyline: Steve Lis started out bodysurfing at age 10, but wanted to rider steeper, faster waves. He started building and riding small marine plywood paipos, adding skegs near the tail, and then starting experimenting with foils, concave and rocker.
Some of the early years kneeboarding footage in the trailer looks like some nice Big Rock surf riding (located on the south end of "Windansea Bay" in La Jolla, San Diego, Calif.).

Anyone know Steve Lis?
I believe he now lives on Kauai.

I had a fish shaped by Lis way back in the day. Haven't seen him since the day I got the board.
It was everything you've ever heard about. Sadly stolen out of a pal's yard in OB a few years later.
