I suppose it’s the way the world works, someone works for decades to produce a personal achievement.
And Years later a corporation comes along and exploits the same as their own invention and the world believes it’s true.
But it’s like they don’t have Google on their computer ? If you make a claim at least Google it, but honesty isn’t important.
Just wave a flag of excitement to attract the hordes with money.
What a wonderful world.
Gilbert Lum would be amazed how popular surf foils are, but not so much at the many fathers it seems to have.

For me, this is the best hydrofoil I have seen in time, patented in 2004, the design and detail of its construction is impressive. A great job and reference if you want to make a good foil

Paiops are better suited to foiling than their floppy cousins the boogie board. And I’ve always been inspired by Gilbert Lum who built his own simple foil. If something that simple works, what’s with all the hi tech carry on ?

So here’s a simple foil kit. Its from a single piece of ply.
63F5F7CA-BDC7-4E93-81BF-377E93927F53.jpeg
A The Paipo, a unique X shape that fits the 4 limbs of the rider.
B The struts connecting paipo to foil, Ive curved both ends in to avoid catching kelp or slow board riders. And the long section will sit under the paipo hull to support the elevated riders weight.
C The foil. Why these new foil makers who have to make every foil look like a plane wing, they just don’t understand how a wave works. A simple bullet shape is more pitch stable and safer without the wide slicing wings.
The only question is should I glass or otherwise attach the pieces so I can swap foils ?

G'day Brett,

From a pragmatic point of view I'd say add on. Given the cost of a board and uncertainty about whether Id like the experience or it suits conditions, I'd go removable. Unless there is another plan up your sleeve about board type. Gilbert Lum's board looks pretty unique.

Hi Bob, I posted Gilbert’s Foil board in contrast to Terry Hendricks technical version. Both able to do the same thing, but I’d always favour the simpler one. My idea is to show just how simple foil design can be with ply and a few bits to screw on.
I’ll go with the Add-On version.

Don't put any weight on my opinion - it was my 2 bobs worth.

makes sense tho.
Im thinking of putting an XPS foam skin on the hull for buoyancy.

Hi Bret
This is my version of your idea. It has Moto GP and F1 influences as well. Does it make sense?

Hi Chrispi, you don’t need to ask me for advice, Im sure you have enough experience with foils. Probabaly more than me.
I like the minimalist monocoque approach, surfing foils don’t need to be the complex multi wings on a fuselage like they are now, just good design, something simpler like yours is the future of foil design.
Just needs a bit of testing and tweaking to see how it goes.

People often mistake good design for aesthetics but I instantly see that you know that when the craft is sitting in the water the side supports of the foil engage a wide base area for forward drive but as it rises from the yellow to orange to red waterline the side supports taper and have less area. At higher speeds you need less interference and I see you’ve tapered the supports fore and aft to keep the lift of the foil in a central position.
I get it.

I have unfortunately lost my work shop. So I will not be shaping for some time. I am immigrating to the UK, unfortunately no more warm water surf to test in! or space to shape in

Who would emigrate to the UK ?
I suspect Chrispis been kidnaped by the global foiling Illuminati keen to keep his breakthrough designs hidden from the world.
Hang in ther Chrispi, well send Chuck Norris to get you out !

I have a surfer friend who moved from Sydney, AU to London for 10 years.
He returned and vowed never to return to London, the UK or have anything to do with English women.
2 years later he’s married to an English lass with a son and living in London. So there must be some attraction.
...but I still think Crispis been kidnaped.

Besides the British museum, the other attraction is that it is close to Ireland.

Har to imagine that the creativity will stop.

My UK mate says that he gets over to France to surf at Lacanau where he says it’s amazing surf.
I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Chrispi.

I have a tiny shed to work in. I have never surfed in water colder than 19c, I think getting used a full wetsuit is going to be a problem. I see Keith spends most off of his surf time outside the UK. It is going to be a stressful life change

There are gems further south of Lacanau. A warmer weather escape for Chrispi.

RE Cold water and wetsuits...hahaha. Welcome to the club! BUT THERE IS GOOD NEWS!

Modern wetsuits are really, really good. They can be a bitch to put on due to the stretch, but once on a well-fitted suit will fit like a second skin. As other older surfers can attest, it wasn't always so. Before I got mine I asked on the old bodysurfing "newsgroup" about suits, and among the responses were a couple that said sometimes the suits didn't get completely wet inside. I aggressively challenged that on factual levels and also common sense, since wetsuits traditionally needed to trap water inside to work. But then I got one...and literally some bodysurfing sessions I could come in and find much of the inside chest area dry. Bodyboard or paipo and in anything under 4' most of the chest area stayed dry.

You need to try a couple of brands though as they don't all fit the same. Nothing worse than one that binds. I could never wear O'Neill in SoCal in the 70s-90's, chafed the crap out of my armpits. Some Body Glove suits worked back then, then Rip Curl into the 2000's. At that time Rip Curl didn't make a suit at any price that fit me but O'Neill had sizes that fit like a glove. Don't know a thing about what's available in the Uk.

The stretch is great but putting them on or taking off can be a strain. I may have already told the story, but it bears repeating. At a small concert a few years ago I overheard a 2-time rock and roll hall of fame guy and long-time surfer describe it to old friends from younger days like this: "By the time you get these new wetsuits on you're exhausted."

Where in the UK? I'e seen video online of all kinds of nice beach situations...
