Remember the fun we used to have in the '60's with those blue and yellow nipple ripping canvas air mats with the rope around them? It's taken nearly a year from conception to completion but, as usual, Jose and Corky nailed it again with this "Boogie Board on steroids". This "Scotty Board" was a special custom order but way too cool not to add to the Corky Carroll Surfboards line. Last step is the track pad we will be putting on the deck. Sooooo this thing, 4'5 1/4" by 20"
It was originally made as a belly board for my dad. (The piss funny thing is that I wrote 5' 5 1/4" on the stringer) Wanted to try and get him back in the water at 70 plus. It kinda failed, he never tried it. Injured his knee getting back in the ocean just swimming. So its been in the shed finished for over a year. Just daring me. Matt Williams always said I should try and surf it. I rode it a few times with flippers as a belly board, and the small fins you see in the last two pics, then I've had a few surfs where I have gone without fins and been getting used to surfing it. (Yes getting used to it, try popping to you feet on sub 4 1/2 feet of board at 47 years old. Buuut the MR fins have been a revelation for the standup potential of this thing. I've had two great surfs on it surfing stand up almost every wave. One at really fun lined up noosa on my back hand and another surfing some crazy fun left shore breaks on my fore hand this arvo.
Just left me giggling. The edge, the massive single to double conave.... highline speed like nothing I have ever experienced. And the thing is, IT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE SURFED! It was supposed to be a prone board.
Hopefully I will have some footage sent to me from the noosa session soon. For the record I can surf, I was doing nice cutbacks and a few backhand snaps at noosa and getting a few speedy runs in the shorey but no real turns.

The hands cutouts are not really a problem when riding the board, I just don't think about it. They could be handy to attach a leash or a handle. The nice thing about this board is the outline, and the rocker. My previous boards were hand made plywood boards, no rocker and straight rails. They were a bit faster in small waves but I find this outline more efficient for quick turns, it works a bit like a boogieboard, more dynamic. Someone with the tools and the will to make his own could just imitate this outline, get some rocker using boiled water to bend the nose and get a nice functional board.

Yes it's bamboo. It's nice looking and strong but a bit heavy. I don't really feel differences for how it rides, feels like plywood.

Had a test ride this morning on the Sniper "planky" paipo.
It went pretty good, I had some nice rides.
I like the outline, it works a bit like a bodyboard, you can easily dig the rail if needed or ride it flat for controled side slipping.
I didn't use the handles, but they didn't bother me.
On one ride I could do a late take off bodyboard style, then on the shoulder switch to the superman stance, then do a kick turn, kick again positionning backward and enjoy the reform the other side.
So that's a nice all-round wooden paipo to ride.

Nice board. From a distance I thought it was an Austin paipo, in plan shape and color pattern, gloss finish and clear bottom. I, too, am interested in the dimensions Length, Width, Thickness and width at 12 inches from the nose and 12 from the tail. As Keith Usher noted, I also wonder how the skeg will perform across a variety of conditions. Forever, I have been a fan of removable fin systems and would move my center fin forward or aft depending upon the wave type and conditions.

this board is 58"L x 14"W x 1" very fast like a bullet - no fins/skegs on the bottom trying to experiment with the technology of the older Hawaiian shapes - the wave spray off the rails gets you sometimes because of its width - hope to ride at a sunrise session in Waikīkī tomorrow

Very cool. I think I saw a board in the women's prone event with fin boxes on the deck: to help hold the lower body in place? I'd be curious to hear about or see photos of boards built specifically for para prone. Looks like your board is pretty much a standard shortboard. Any ideas on additional ways to make it prone friendly?

yep - some surfers put fins on top to keep their legs from sliding off on steep drops or getting hit by whitewater. Personally I find it makes getting back on the board too time consuming but it's a trade off for sure. Yeah my board's an "adaptified" shortboard off Craigslist haha. I also have a second leg leash (pictured) I use that keeps my legs together as one going rogue can throw off my turning

Ha! 'Going Rogue' I love it. I surf prone due to old age and rotten joints. I continue to seek the prone board that allows me to employ the approach to waves developed over 60 years of standing on a board. My boards have a concave deck, but my body still goes rogue in some situations.

More power to you Casey, you are inspiring. There is a group of us here in Oz that ride prone because of old age/ injuries etc and we have reached similar conclusions as to fin placements for turning. Whereas a stand boarder can move their weight and drive point around prone surfers are more fixed in position. Not to say that you won't slide back for a late drop but lying on the board we find that your drive comes from your hips and thighs and so you want your fins up the board for real turns. But the most important thing is to get in the ocean somehow.

I’ve seen kneeboarders modify standup boards fin placement to work for them. Like what you did. GOOD JOB! Moving the fins forward makes the board easier to turn

I have been prone riding for a short time. I also ride a 5’6” board, but it is 20 3/4” wide. Do you know why a narrow board rather than a wider board?

Did you start with fins in the original position? What difference did the further forward position make to you? My hunch the further forward position works better on these longer boards.

I did start with riding boards with the fins in the original position, but got really frustrated with how hard it was to turn. My first ISA in 2021 my board was so sluggish off the bottom and I couldn't get to the lip before waves closed out. Now it's way more responsive

Thanks. There is a lot of trial and error with this territory, as well as persistence to follow the spark. The other factor is that as you are arm paddling, you can position yourself forward to catch waves, and surf, basically from the same spot. Have you ever heard of Leigh Wai Do who used to surf Ala Moana in the 60s?

Beyond respect and into admiration. I have known older surfers who after their first midlife body fail end up getting depressed and give up surfing because they have been unable to reconceptualise what it means to go surfing.

the key to a shadow is to have a light surface for te shadow to have more of an effect. You could just do a thin highlight of a grey on one side to show a bit of depth. I would use a posca pen. Just do a mock up of your artwork and experiment.

I am interested in the dimensions as well as the bottom shape,rails,foil etc
At 4’6”it’s getting out of the realm of those who have graduated from boogie board’s.
Would be great to get some feedback from Michael re the design and the waves that it’s designed to perform best in.

I have boards with cork but there needs to be a way of making the cork not take on water because it does over time. Mine were done with paulownia board with a cork deck. It did help with buoyancy. I don’t seem to be able to post an image but I did a lord board which was unreal in clean surf.

I love your random collection of shapes and use of beach stuff I used to live in Braunton but am now living in southern Sweden and making paipos from paulownia for freinds and family. Happy new year and say hi to the beach for me!

After 25 years surfing in the Uk mostly in north devon, Sweden rekindled my love for it. The surf here is pretty poor and inconsistent….but…. Every surf feels like an adventure, it’s relatively quiet, the conditions in winter are quite full on and I really love it. Frustrated at times.:::but love it.

Little update.... Been building up the fin.
Bit of a lob on the glass, grind back with the angle grinder balancing act going on.
No idea what I'm doing, it's the Chicken Joe approach.

Keith Usher there was a guy who made one in San Diego and I thought the shape was sick so I just copied his but later when I met with him his was way better shaped. But the corners don’t really dig in because the way it’s shaped

My wave ridding experience has been rejuvenated. I am still learning to adapted to bodyboarding equipment. It is a lot different turning a board on your stomach. Im having a ton of fun!

I graduated to a body board at 66 years. Due to knee problems and my quick twitch muscles retiring. Since bodyboarding my wave riding experience has completely been rejuvenated. I am having the time of my life. I am new to bodyboarding and don’t know much about the equipment. I ride a lost mayhem puddle fish quad fin. It is 5‘6“x 21”. After riding it several times I became dissatisfied with the quad, set up and removed the smaller trailing fins. Since doing that the board has come alive and rides really fast. I have no back up board so I decided to have this board shaped in case my paddlefish ever got damaged. I feel like a thrilled teenager.

I did, the handplane and Paipo are solid Paulownia, the Fish is a hollow, hybrid Paulownia board, they can be made to order or i run classes supplying materials to self make your own boards, the most rewarding and satisfying way to ride a wave!

I’m 6.2” and the board is 3ft10 so didn’t want it smack bang in the middle at the top or bottom. Offset to the side works for me, I don’t paddle much, just kick like crazy with me flippers.

there is lots of Gorilla glue and Epoxy it worked way better than I thought it would. Next time I’m sealing the board better first and use less finishing it up. The idea was to use all 100% recycled materials I mean minus the 15$ of epoxy resins

Thank You so Much!! . I really did so Much work. It was sand shape, sand sand epoxy Miter saw, skill saw, gorilla glue. Epoxy, sand. Not flat enough paint the deck to show low spots. Better. Replaced pieces, foam. Epoxy, fiberglass the rails, sand fiberglass patches for tail and doubled the nose up. Sand, epoxy. more sanding fixing holes or bumps. It was totally awesome!!
I learned so much I mean so much. This is actually one of two. The better outline I didn’t use yet!!! So now I’m going to make a 45”.

Fond memories of First Street Jetty, mostly in the 1980s/90s, before it become whacked out crowded. Think it was September 1985 or 1986, I was camping down near Frisco OBX and a tropical storm was rolling up the coast, mandatory evac, and headed up to VaBch grabbed a then off-season cheap motel and was riding real nice swell from out beyond the buoy area. Have fun with the new board... but watch those splinter in back!

Yeah, I went out there yesterday with 52 people in the water. Checked from 80th down and nothing. It was a good session though, I wore my stiff fins and was getting in before the loggers, hehe. Good news is the bars are coming back and there are others streets breaking today. Seeya soon, man!

its 4'8" x 181/2" x 1 1/2" , basically a flat piece of paulownia with little rocker shaped into the bottom and the pad glued onto te deck for extra floatation , I have knelt on it a couple of times but it a prone rider.

what is that board made of? foam and fiberglass? I'm looking for a way to make my own boards, but they have to be flexible material, I can't find ep or pp, typical bodyboard cores in Spain, I've tried with eva and some other foam, they don't work

Both fiberglass as such. Flexibility doesn't equate to solid rails. These things are fast and so far have handled 2ft runners to maybe solid 6ft at the Farm.

I have split the bodyboard stringer. It can be due to the pressure and force generated by the keels or a strong blow. 2m waves. to be able to continue entering the water while I think about how to do the next paipo. I have bought another bodiboard a depply with 4 channels.

It’s about 20mm thick, shaped like a regular boogie board and made entirely of cork. It was shaped by a guy called Dave Hahn in San Francisco. He stopped making them about 5 years ago so I scoured the planet and managed to find a few blanks. It absolutely flies and is super-easy to punch through the big stuff because it’s only just positive buoyancy.

I didn’t struggle getting into them but the conditions were challenging. The waves were breaking really quickly so getting enough down the line speed was tough. I kept on getting nailed

I found that I had to take a high line to beat some of the sections. Some of the other waves were really fun.

it is a board I made from a Palownia blank I had imported from New Zealand . The wood is white, but with some linsead oil and a bit of sunshine it turns dark brown.
Nowadays we can get palownia blanks in Spain, so time to order another one

Well, after my chronic back got worse, I started bellyboarding on my 10' Pipeliner pintail. It went better than I thought it should. so... I switched to a 9'4 John Holley pintail, it worked better than. the 10 footer. After all that body-whompin' on longboards, It seemed like a smaller board would improve my situation. Those full size boards did go fast! My first true "bodyboard" was a little moontail quad finned wake surfing board. 5'8". in epoxy,and styrofoam. It is called "DEVILFISH" Perfect for small beachbreak.I could meet somebody who can see my quiver, and take photos, But I am almost computer illiterate, so....I also have a recently shaped 6' fish, shaped by Larry Gephart, That board is amazing, Larry evolved his newbreak fish, along with PLHS buddy Steve Lis. They were always there whenever it was cracking. I usually had to work after age 16, Then attaining adulthood became my main time-consuming feature. I have another board, which will be compleated in 4 or 5 weeks. I better not brag about that one, except to tell ya that it will be bright RED!!!

In Mr Peters' Collier Junior HS woodshop, I made a pine board, with a glassed, concaved botton. 3/4" thick, NO ROCKER. I tried it down by the pier. It went too fast. I hit a patch of kelp, and it stopped, I kept going. deck wax might have helped, but it was pretty, and shiny The template was from a Newport Paipo owned by John Brockway. two small fins. I kept it in my mother's flower bed. It sort of never got a second chance. I an interested in making a paipo board out of 1 1/4" ply. Or mabee some 1 1/2" sugar pine.

Mr Peters was a "barefoot" water skier: very sympatico to water sports. Imcluding surfers. Back in those days, surfers were frowned upon by school administrators, and other sectors of "the establishment" I got an A in the class. Peters was stoked with my project, and so was I. In 11th grade, I was really into making my own surfboards, So, I took woodshop at PLHS. First day, the teacher said: no surf boards, no fins, nothing to do with surfing would be allowed. I earned myself a D.

Neil Luke I saw an old board of yours with a belly channel. Any thoughts on how these work, as opposed to a channel that goes all the way through to the tail?

I mainly used them in a tri fin set up , then I went to double concave.
Out through tail was good if fins set further back or she would float in the tube , I eventually settled on single to double concave to vee thru tail which I have mainly used up till now with a hull type bottom and chine rails.
