Re: vintage video
Krusher,
One of the guys in the video Is Jim Growney. Jim has been interviewed for the paipo interview series. The modern version of these boards, the Hawaii Paipo Design, is made by Paul Lindbergh, who also has been interviewed. There are a few people on the forum who ride HPDs, and then there is an interview with Sean Ross, who rode one at Pipeline and still surfs places like G-land on a paipo. Variants of this style of board, are ridden prone and kneeling. Interviews with Stan Osserman & Craig Matthew tell some of this story, including a glimpse of Harry Akisada's surfing.

I don't know how many times that I have watched that video, but it is still my favorite paipo vid It is amazing how much technique can be learned from that video that is from over 50 years ago. It makes me think of de-evolution.

Re: vintage video
It sure is an interesting style!
Seems to produce a lot of bounce though when you have your elbows on the rails to can lift you bodyweight a bit and take some of the bouncing shock out the ride.
I would love to see how Sean ross goes at G-land! (best wave int he world!)

Krusher.
Some interesting photos here: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/Sea ... 1109.shtml The aerial at AM was ahead of its time.
The bouncing of the HPDs is a combination of wave chop, speed and board design (HPD can ride bounce at speed like a stone that skims when thrown into water).
Spudnut,
Good to hear you've found the clip worth watching multiple times. How it got on-line is a long story, but it's a pretty unique record as far as I know. I'm sure Stig Waidelich would be pleased to hear others are stoked watching it.
