Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest

#1

Unread post by Ted »

This year will run 14 events over five days of surfing, starting with the Presidents’ Day Weekend, Feb.16, 17 and 18 and, with surf permitting, ending up Feb. 23 and 24th. The award ceremony will close out the Classic during the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 24.

Bunky says the Paipo division will likely run the first weekend. I am definitely going. HiPaipo, can you come?

Is Hipaipo still around?

Interesting to hear a report on who is surfing and what is being ridden

Haha! No skegs allowed in the Paipo contest for all you belly-boarding fags. I guess you'll all have to learn how to swim...

Didn't you have Paul put that huge Greenough skeg on your big HPD?

The board that Paul calls the HPD spoon was designed for a skeg. It has a fin box. I don't have a problem with any kind of paipo or belly board - fins or no. I do have a problem with juvenile language. Maybe you'd like to explain your post a little more clearly.

And by the way, I'll put skegs, fin boxes, fishl' plugs or leashloops or whatever else the f*ck I want on my boards.

Tough titties.

That's not what he told me. He says it's a Monster Board and that you insisted he put a fin on it.

I was perfectly clear. Thick belly boards with flotation are a totally different sport. Thin neutral flotation paipos are like body surfing. You have to know how to swim.

Well they won't qualify as paipos at the Makaha contest. You can sit on them and rotate too as far as I'm concerned.

Talk nice, boys.

The Makaha contest also has age (over 50) and/or weight (over 250) restrictions.

Take your vengeance out on SUPs or longboarders!

BTW... I love ya all despite some of the stupid looking boards we all ride :)

Caught some real nice fun ones in NW PR this morning, foam, fiberglass, skegs and all on my Austin Checkered RPM (black and blue). That is what it is all about. Wish I was in better shape.

Over 50 or over 250 lbs and no skegs.

These are just contest rules - they don't define what constitutes a paipo. The HPD isn't a traditional paipo nor are Wally Froiseth's twin finned Pai po boards.

Obstreperousness aside, Paipo Jim makes an interesting point that very neutral paipo are more like bodysurfing. More bouyant boards enable a different style of prone wave riding. I like both styles.

Well stated, Bob. All of these boards ridden kipapa-style have been referred to as body surfing boards. To be a true purist one should simply body surf without the aid of fins, wetsuits or any thing else. The World Belly Boarding Championships in the UK have esoteric rules as well: no wetsuits, no leashes and no swim fins, and fancy use of those narrow, nose flipped thin wood "surfboards."

I am a real purist. I only surf naked with no fins or boards---year round here in Northern California. Any other type of surfing isn't "real" surfing.

Tone it down boys or this thread goes into the dumpster heap.

We are being a little sensitive in how we are processing some statements. Try turning a statement into a positive expression and discussion rather than a flame throwing contest. More aloha goes a long way.

It's a shame they don't open up the paipo division. Not like there are hordes of people of any age or size riding paipos, even on O'ahu. Would be fun to watch or enter. I would have to nearly double my size to make the weight class though.

Ted: Are you entering the contest or just going over to watch?
