Re: A-Fib
My 57 year old wife has Had Afib her whole life and runs circles around me.....our 29 year old Son recently found he also has Afib and surfs circles around me. Bottom line....be aware....don't over party....get plenty of sleep....stay hydrated and just live right. Easy for me to say since I don't have it....yet.....but it does seem to be the diagnosis du jour and I sometimes wonder if our ancestors lived fat dumb and happy with Afib in total ignorant bliss. Seriously....I don't want to poke fun since I do not know your circumstance.....but as an ER Doc pal told me the best medicine for most of life's ills....and especially Afib....is to stay fit and live right. Keep the muscle fit. Signed Dr. SJB.

Re: A-Fib
Tim,
I believe my wife also has this. Three years ago we climbed the big peak behind Macchu Pichu (she stopped a bit because of what may have been altitude sickness or in hindsight AF symptoms, or a combination of both). Last year she experienced similar symptoms in the Rockies at an altitude where altitude sickness shouldn't have been an issue. She saw a doctor late last year after symptoms at the local shopping centre. She's fitter than me, walking an hour daily and does other stuff. She can still walk for an hour but can feel a bit breathless walking up steps. She recently got put on medication and has had a heart monitor thingo installed. She still has some symptoms but generally does everything she usually does.
She has very low blood pressure and other medical conditions so you can't generalise from a sample of one or two.
Best advice I can give is get good specialist advice, which you probably have done already. As difficult as it sounds, a realistic positive attitude is also important. Keep surfing.

Re: A-Fib
The common causes of A. Fib. are hypertension, coronary artery disease, tobacco, alcohol, and heart valve problems.
So the first 4 are lifestyle caused and curable same way, mostly diet since that has biggest and most sustained exposure and impact of all lifestyle factors

6'5" played basketball, baseball competitively until i was 40 and surfed my whole life. 80% of tall athletic folks will get it. SO, I cant change that I'm tall. no more basketball, no more baseball. no more beer, no more cigars, no more chocolate, no coffee, no tea, no sugar, no carbs, no stress, no heart disease....NO LIFE!

Re: A-Fib
i meet with my doctor in a couple of weeks. the above was in the "info pile" the hospital cardiologist gave me. i'd rather live than have another cigar and beer but, if i can do both, the latter in moderation, itd be great.

Tim,
My wife drinks wine, eats chocolate, sweet things & plenty of pasta etc; drinks coffee & tea. She exercises. There'll be individual differences but moderation is likely the key.

Re: A-Fib
My grandfather (who had peasant genetics, grew up in dirt floor hut in Romania) was told by his doc when in mid 70s' that if he quit smoking and drinking he would live 10 years or more to his life. He immediately said, "But then, why would I want to?" Died at 85, during afternoon nap, with big smile on his face.
