Sweet shape.
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?

Re: New Hull for Fishy
1 1/2 is correct. i like to keep my boards right around that. usually someone larger thinks they want something thicker, then i let them try one of my boards before they purchase. 95% have went thinner. i have gave some thicker but i scoop out a lot and leave the thickness out toward the rails. it brings the center of gravity closer to the water and still gives max float while supplying the ooo just right amount of flexie feeling.

SG,
There must be a paipo invasion going on in San Diego. I pick up my new board in a couple of weeks - it is a bit thinner than yours and was based on a drawing Paul Gross did for me. It's not a standard build but a light weight composite. It will be interesting to compare how these thin boards look and ride. Is this board intended to be ridden with a fin?

Re: New Hull for Fishy
grumpy, ill post as soon as i get it back from the glasser, heez swamped so it could be a few weeks.
bob, LOL, hardly an invasion. 60 boards in 4 years? and 10 of those have been shipped to texas, hawaii, oregon and washington along with some up to my hometown of santa cruz. my boards are designed to ride with fins but work pretty well sans fin(s). a great a side to displacement hulls. and actually are fun upside down too!
youre lucky to get PG to design you a board, ive asked him a bunch and he says hees to busy with his mat stuff. i'm thankful though, without him turning me down i might not ever have gotten into designing and shaping my own.

SG,
50 local boards over 4 years is a lot of paipo (probably several times the total paipo population).
I sent Paul some photos and he updated a drawing he'd done a while ago. I then sent a variety of images to a shaper and some form of phoenix has emerged. I can't recall in what context Paul originally did some drawings. I certainly appreciate his assistance.

Re: New Hull for Fishy
bob, thats funny! hahahaaha. not sure what its like where you live but here in san diego county everybody surfs! this is the surf center of the universe! or so it seems. ever seen pics of the paipo fests? thats a micro slice of surf life here. i surf from the cliffs to o-side. i think we think that only the people that participate on this site are the only ones that are paipoing/bellyboarding. mr. mike sells a lot of boards and he just hangs mostly in coronado, out of his yard, and thats just a tiny tiny tiny nick in the total surf population of the county. i surf all over the dang county bro and have gotten most of my orders (other than repeat customers) by being in the water and having folks ask me about them and most of those are standups. now, not all of the boards have been foam/glass about 40% have been plywood. 5 boards have been made (4'9"'-5'4") to stand on, as well as ride prone. 4 have been made for kneeriders for both knee and prone riding. i try and get to the board swaps at patagonia at least once a year and that always draw little crowds. i sold 6 or 7 boards out of out of mitches in solana beach. 3 have been spoons. i've laid a bunch of boards out on the grass at o-side pier, swamis and o.b. sh1t, i have 22 boards of my own! i, like so many folks these days, am a board whore, bob. and bob, if you dont believe me, you can call home and ask my wife! LOL!

Re: New Hull for Fishy
Cliff surfing? Now THAT is an ancient Hawaiian sport from the pre-missionary days! And, what is an O-side? Is that like a G-spot of surfing?
<joking, but unless you are San Diego-centric it kind of slides by (like a good paipo)>.

Re: New Hull for Fishy
SG,
Good to hear there is a healthy scene there.
Admittedly I avoid crowded surf breaks as much as I can, however, in Oz I've only once ran into another paipo rider in the surf (excluding some pre-arranged surfs) and that was recently. Noosa and Byron bay, surf towns by any standards, would have some alaia surfers and Dick Ash from around Byron sells his bellybloggers. I've heard of HPD being shipped here and one of Nomotomas's boards is headed down this way .
Oz is a big country so there may be a hotbed of paipo riders here somewhere I've not come across it in my travels, real or virtual.
Most people are still puzzled by me/my board, but that might just be me.

Re: New Hull for Fishy
I think we might be in for the paipo's 15 mins of fame globally.
The handboard seems to be the recent "cool" thing to have in the uk, and from last year people asking me if my board was a kneeboard, some are now saying "I that one of them pai a poo po things?"
They seem to be more in the stand-ups comfort zone as there of the same board construction
