Frankenboogie Mk. III
The original design is nearly impossible to duck dive, but the second version duck dives easily enough. Hopefully I can find the sweet spot.
Here are the threads for the earlier boards:

I imagined that this board would look good and be named "Black Beauty." But she's already looking like "Black Betty." As you can see in the pictures, I rough cut the foam with a serrated bread knife. The nose section has had a round of sanding, which kind of gives you an idea about the finished product.

Reminiscent of Pendo's Rubber Ducky.

I built a similar board with closed cell foam on the outside and a core made of paulownia and 1/8" plywood. It works well but is a little too floaty for my apparently freakish taste.
Should have used thinner foam.

A. Float IS the enemy.
B. There have been some seriously ugly boards on this site lately, like that mouse (?) board. We should have an ugly bOrd contest.

Re: Frankenboogie Mk. III
UncleG, that is why I added an emoticon... to know it is in jest. Troublemaker!!!
Atlanta and I will be on an extended courtship later this month... he may need to keep his latest FrankenBoogie in a board bag when around me. But, true, it is one thing to say one thing about one's own girl friend and another to say something about another's girl friend!
Critiquely speaking, that board looks to be another super floater between the materials, length and width. His prior version this past March was shorter (still on the long side for me) and maybe narrower than this newest Ugly creation, but his cutie pie board in March absolutely came to my rescue for a couple of days when the airline did not deliver my board along with my body. Anyway, regardless of the float, the Ugly is intended mostly for small East Coast surf and at the proving grounds later this month it is mostly a channel paddleout zone, so the float + length is not a huge issue and a great opportunity for experimentation.
The funnest part is being able to amateurishly critique each others' boards in-person while refreshing ourselves and knowing that NOTHING is personal
Atlanta, can you post a photo of Cutie and Ugly next to each other? How much do each of them weigh (getting personal now... no questions about age! although we do know that both are young). Dare I ask about dimensions?

Not sure about the winners... especially since Poobah has been downsizing his harem over the past few years.soulglider wrote:Kage, wouldn't b fair, poobah would win hands down! And that's civilized...

Re: Frankenboogie Mk. III
But on the other hand, they are not expensive. I decided to build this last one when I saw that I already had the wood sitting in my backyard shed. If I remember correctly, the foam was about thirty bucks.

I built a similar board with closed cell foam on the outside and a core made of paulownia and 1/8" plywood.
Should have used thinner foam.
Uncle G, was the paulownia ply combo for strength or for some other reason? How thick was the paulownia?

Re: Frankenboogie Mk. III
The Paulownia board started life as my first purpose built wooden(not ply) paipo but after a while I wanted it thinner and eventually I got it right where I wanted it; an amazing amount of flex and it was so much fun but one day it got away from me and took a pummeling, ended up broken lengthwise along a grain line. It was less then three eighths of an inch in some places.bgreen wrote:Uncle G, was the paulownia ply combo for strength or for some other reason? I knew it wouldn't last long but it was sure fun while it did.
Eventually I glued it back together and laminated it to eighth inch plywood and then skinned both sides with closed cell foam in attempt to build blackball friendly board with more paipo like shape. It's ugly and it works okay but like I said, a bit too much flotation for my taste at this point. Super comfy tho'
