SDF paipo rincon rocket 002
Its now 5 years since I documented my first paipo build here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=250
In that time I have tried, Pu and poly resin, eps and epoxy, pu and epoxy, hollow paulownia epoxy top coat, oiled thin paulownia solid board and a surf mat and have in the process learned a lot about what works and how boards/ rails actually work. And shaped a few boards for others.
After all this it turns out that the best performance board was the first one That poor board took a beating and many plane journeys till it was so beaten/sunken you would not believe! But even beaten and miss-shapen it still performed very well and retained it original feel. (lesson learned there too)
So I retired it and put it in the mail to California and had memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=114 build a computer file of it. (I will let him tell you how beaten it was!) But he did a fantastic job of recreating it original likeness.
(if anyone want to build one I am happy to share the file)
After a few false starts back in the UK with another shapers CNC machine I have finally today finished shaped it and it will be glassed this week. The aim is to see if it can mirror the first magic boards performance,

SDF paipo rincon rocket 001..."picture is worth 1,000 words"
It wasn't until I built the CNC file and viewed it in 3D that I could appreciate the elements of this shape.

Now that's proper use of CNC tech, reproduction of a magic board! Looking forward to hearing how it turns out.

Re: SDF paipo rincon rocket 002
I think over many surfs it got dinged and maybe had some water in it, I think then in the hold of the plane it got squashed with altitude (or some other more sensible physics)CHRISPI wrote:Was the 001 in a fire, if it’s from riding you must be pulling big G s, I am impressed
probably had over 200 surfs on it.

Re: SDF paipo rincon rocket 002
Buzzing out hundreds of identical mediocre shapes using poor quality foam, then having low wage non-surfers scrub smooth and do crappy glass jobs on them. Ideally all that would happen in a 3rd world country with no safety regs enforcement.nomastomas wrote:...and, what would be "improper" use of CNC tech?GeoffreyLevens wrote:Now that's proper use of CNC tech, reproduction of a magic board!...

Re: SDF paipo rincon rocket 002
Well, that's a relief. I wouldn't want to be accused of using CNC tech improperly.

Re: SDF paipo rincon rocket 002
Well after a poor run of surf conditions I finally got in the water with the new board and a stoked to say its fulfilled the project brief totally
The rocker and slight displacement hull in the front that helps the the board glide (displace) through that difficult 0 to 5mph before planing like the original did it there, I had struggled to make that happen with my other shaping attempts.
Its turns hard on a rail with great hold (finless) I round over the edge of the rail, the only hard edge is the back of the board.
Stoked!!!!
3ft 8" , 21 3/8 , 2 /38 25.5L

So it's an improvement on #1?
Are the rails essentially square like a boogie board?

Its just self adhesive neoprene foam you can buy online, but the glue was poor and if came off in a few surfszensuni wrote:Sounds fun, what material the deck pad is made of ?

Its no better or worse that no1, so got my magic board back !!bgreen wrote:So it's an improvement on #1?

The bottom chine is flat/square the edges are rounded over. only hard edge I have is across the tail.
Next evolution will be to try a different tail shape (more of a corner peg that a point) and either a single or double concave/channels on either side of the board (between bot1 and rail) outside the main single concave, to try to get so more traction/pivot on top turns. I guess kinda hooking the underside of the rail like on your latest board.
The tail is left square on the cnc cut so I can hand shape any tail I like.

I like the idea of adding a single channel out there. You might want to consider raising the rail point maybe half-way while you're at it to add a little more rocker out at the rail. Will the channel start at the next slice up or at the middle slice?

I think i would try a channel/s stretching about 12 to 15" up from the tail. (open at the tail.)
I rode a friends board in california and he had shape a tail with about 4" corner pegs and a crescent cut out between, I found it easier to do a hard top turn pivoting on that peg.
