There's a little bit of paipo stuff at the start of this, but is a great movie anyway, https://www.redbull.com/int-en/films/fi ... JeARY2gTmI

I lost interest toward the end, but agree there is some interesting stuff there.

It's hard to tell when they are talking about bellyboards, how these boards were ridden. All the Steve Lis footage is kneeling. Jeff Ching had a Hawaiian background, but he referenced Val Ching riding standup at the Wall. The Paipo interview with Jon Mans that Kage conducted a few years back, was a good example of ply bellyboard to kneeling transition.

It did make me wonder how a fish would go ridden prone. I know of a couple of similar style designs but not ridden one myself.

Anyone know Steve Lis or Bird?

A guy in california brought me a board to the beach once to try that had been made as a prone board but was basically small fish, I took is out and hated it. I think it was about 4.10 but was just far too long, you had to be constantly moving to the front to make it go and right to the back to get over the fins to make it turn, but its lone rail just made it want to track in a straight line. I consider the design I use currently to be a prone fish and the right ratios to work from one position.

I also agree with losing interest in it once it got halfway through.

I recently found this video with some paipo stuff, but unfortunately IMO ita the made in the worst form of modern OCD editing. Its a shame as redbull makes some great stuff. pity they let the work experience kids loose on one topic I was really interested in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAQy_VXcqbg&t=5s

I really wanted to see this guy go out at Pipeline and get hammered. As far as a history goes it was really poor. The paipo stuff was woeful, but even bodyboarding history was next to non-existent. Tom Morey was mentioned once in passing. Then there were missed opportunities. They had access to Mark Cunningham and Mike Stewart, who could have told them some history.

I had a passing thought only yesterday to put together some of the hawaiian paipo footage I have. Now I have a new computer, perhaps it is time to do something like this.

I'm glad you guys had the same feelings about the redbull video as me (fell like I'm just a moaning old fart sometimes)

I think its an unfortunate modern thing that now with such easy access the good quality video gear (or just do it on your phone) That people have no idea there are many other skills, which are much more important before the kit, like plot and storyboarding a video. With the modern term "edit" seem to have come video that would get an F at film school, but are applauded by the masses on youtube. I find over 50% of fully produced modern surf movies barely watchable.
I was surprised the redbull let that one be uploaded without giving the guy a serious pointing out of where all the basics were lacking. Its no wonder people still reach for endless summer rather than watch the modern stuff.

Krusher,

do you have editing skills or just views on what makes a good video? I'm giving some serious thought about a short video on Hawaiian paipo boards.

Jeez guys...I watched this back when it was posted and thought it was fine. Maybe there was a couple of historical errors? Can't quite remember a week or so on. I totally enjoyed seeing footage of the 1972 World Contest, which I attended the final 2 days of. I remember the boards, the people, seeing (not enjoying) David's fish hanging off the pier or nailed on it, I couldn't tell at the time, and that sunset on the last day after the final.

I thought it was way better than most of the paid soul advertising vids so many make. And the awful "edits" some "influencers" vomit out almost daily. This was a full-on movie with a lot of effort put in to interviews and gathering archival footage. If I recall it was not a Red Bull product; I suspect Red Bull is just making it available, which I appreciate (especially ofter looking at their other offerings).

To be sure, times are different from the glory days of surf movies you actually went out to watch with everybody in town. When I look at what I actually own, it's usually those, although I did get "Litmus" and a couple of newer ones that were of or about older days.

I'd say anybody wanting to make something ought to go ahead and do it, especially true for Prone World. Just do it. Everything will have flaws; it's the stuff that works that makes the world better.

Don't be like the infamous "Hydrodynamica" project, which teased itself for a decade before fading into the ether without a showing. Or Greenough's "Dolphin Glide". Just do the best, slap it out there, listen to what your friends say and blow off the rest.

Seriously? Fat lot of good that did for the surfing world. Never heard a word about any of it. For all the hipster hype they put out...

Ah well. Piss on it. Did anybody other than me see that fantastic documentary Greg Schell did on Kevin Naughton and Craig Peterson? "The Far Shore"? Best movie since the Endless Summer maybe. Easily in my top 5, maybe top 3. Yes, no paipo, but it's about The Life.

I think maybe wires are crossed, we were mostly (i think) talking about the redbull video I posted in the third post of this thread. (if you don't like normal redbull don't go near it!!)

I have No editing skills, I just notice when videos have no narrative or continuity. There are hundreds of online resources the give the Skelton of what underpins a good doc.

Didn't mean to take things off track.

There have been some good surf-related movies/vids. However, there's a reason a lot of people just call it "surf porn". I tend to favor things with some thought and enthusiasm over raw noise and action.

Nels,

Like Krusher I was commenting on the history of bodyboarding video. A mate and I discussing the Fish video found it interesting, especially the early stuff. Interest only waned near the end.

totally missed that link...I'm suffering from severe saltwater withdrawl...must be affecting what's left of my brain.

I guess now I'll have to watch it and get totally horrified with the rest of you. This does explain why I couldn't understand the upset with the Fish movie...

RE bodyboarding clip...yep, you're all right, it sucked. If we're lucky everybody who sees that will keep BASE jumping or whatever.

Paipo movie though...I'd still say go for it. This bodyboarding thing wasn't even done by a core bodyboarder.

Thanks Bob for "illuminating" me...time for me to crawl back in the cave...

I agree about all the hype. Not sure how I came across the museum notice, maybe a friend in San Diego mentioned it. The exhibit was at the Mengei International Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego, Calif., called "Surf Craft." Probably had the most paipos ever on display anywhere (eclipsed my curated display at the Cocoa Beach Surfing Museum about a half year earlier, sans book!).

I was impressed to see the collection of Terry Hendrick's kneeboards and hydrofoil paipo on display--I'd seen them all at his home years prior--but wondered what may have happened to them after he passed away.
