Hot Curl Prone Board
Shaper’s tend to be very visually-oriented individuals. We prefer to “see” something rather than read about it; we would rather look at a map than follow written directions. We are quick to see spatial relationships and have good visual memory. When Jeff Quam presented his Hot Curl board as part of the “show-and-tell” that highlights the Paipo Gathering, my visual processing went into overdrive. I immediately recognized the concaved deep-V in the tail as similar to the tail bottoms I’ve been doing on my G4 and G5 models. And, as my eye followed the 70/30 up-rail line forward, I saw the up-rail shape in the nose that also compares to the G4/G5 shape. But it was Jeff’s description of how this finless shape holds into the wave face and flows with the wave that that led me to my “a-ha” moment. The soft, 50/50 rail allows water to wrap around it, and, along with its relatively thin profile, allows the rail to penetrate the wave face and remain in contact without releasing. No, its not the fastest rail design, but it ensures that the rider maintains a speed that is in harmony with the speed of the wave. I immediately “saw” how the Hot Curl design would make for a super fun prone board. And with Jeff’s blessing, I’ve spent the last couple of days designing a finless prone board based upon some (not all) of the “Hot Curl” design features.
The outline is my standard G5 outline, with the wide-point pushed an inch or two forward. The rocker is 2.75” in the nose and 0” in the tail. The deep-V tail with pinched, 50/50 rail, increases the rocker out at the rail by almost 3”. I maintained the wide-point back plan shape, which creates a bump or “hip” in the outline and serves as a pivot point for rail turns. It also corresponds with the spot where the rail rocker begins to accelerate. On the G5, the combination of outline and rail rocker make turns very easy to initiate. I’ve kept the diamond nose, which when matched with the proper length, creates a built-in “handle”. The board is 49” long, 22.5” wide and 2.25” thick, with a volume of 22.4L. The displacement hull design is meant to allow the shape to settle in the water, unlike a planing hull which is designed to ride on the surface. I’m hoping it will allow the rider to tap into the power of the wave, regardless of power level."This is a paipo site...isn't it?"

Here's the tail-view of the Quam/Martin design that inspired it
..., so not quite as deep as the 8’0 x 15 1/2 x 21 7/8 x 16 1/2 x 2 7/8 original, but at 3" pretty deep by prone board standards. I found that it was virtually impossible to go deeper without putting a major kink in the rail line due to the short length.

Thomas I love your deep V's on all my kneeboards you shaped for me so far
Maybe we should work on something like this as our next project

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
I'll need to do a "proof of concept" first...but I have five G5s to get shipped to Florida first. Oh, and there will need to be some waves to ride, too...where are the waves?

Nomas, I look forward to seeing the drawing come into existence. Meanwhile, I'll be interested to hear more from Jeff.

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
It's nearly mid-October in our part of Southern California, and it feels like there will never be waves again. I have to say, the past 4-5 months are close to breaking my stoke. Alas...and there will need to be some waves to ride, too...where are the waves?
I'm going to be landlocked elsewhere for a couple of short trips soon, so hopefully that will ring the bell and bring surf for those who remain. Anything to break the spell...

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
My research has uncovered some "Dual Hot Curl" shapes, which is essentially a finless twin V-tail shape. May be more applicable to a prone board...trying not to get distracted

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
Thanks.
I found his site:
https://www.surfline.co.nz/category/sur ... /hot-curl/
A n extract: "The Double Hot Curl is where the Hot Curl transforms from a traditional displacement hull into a futuristic planing hull. Think of it as Hot Curl meets Fish! This board is designed with two "Hot Curl" tails that breathe freely and allow the water to flow over them and create hold. The Double Hot Curl is a finless board designed NOT to slide. The tail does a good job of holding the board nice and true on the takeoff. This board is designed for the rider to surf with an upright posture and to engage the rails by leaning into turns more like a regular finned board". The thing that struck me, is that you can have the deep concave and the twin Vs, with the planing area forward - this will be more difficult on a much shorter board. It's the antithesis of the flat bottom BB.

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
I read that, too, but I'm not buying the "transformation from displacement to planing hull" either, because other than splitting the tail, the design of the hull remains the same, with belly and up-rails throughout. Flatten the bottom rail-to-rail and change the rail shape to a more 60/40 or down-rail and you would have more of a planing shape. The concave is the result of the dual-V tail, not really designed for lift. the belly in the nose will not want to plane, but want to cut through the water. The idea is to tap into the energy within the wave, like a dolphin, not rise above it. And, yes, its the antithesis of the typical flat-bottom BB, more like Greenough's spoon.

Re: Hot Curl Prone Board
I hoping it will be more of an enhanced bodysurfing experience, finding bliss in the pocket of that hot curl, as opposed to a cut and slash shred-session. Definitely a pointbreak shape...and I just happen to have one close by.

Wondering how this board worked out. Tracking? Slow or fast? Rail to rail transitions?

Never got around to building it....got side-tracked by kneeboarding and building kneeboards. Maybe this year...
