Ask Tom. I think he uses a white vinegar, raw linseed oil and gum turpentine mixture. You could just use tung oil

I really love it, having the extra float from the foam makes life so much easier, especially for breaks with a decent paddle-out. Still working out the rail in the steeper stuff but have had some great fun with it in surf of all sizes so far!

cheers Allan, I think I'll try and stick with a linseed oil based finish to try and stay within the realm of what Tom appears to use, but I'll keep this one in mind for future projects!

I’ve got a Tom Wegener surfie which came uncoated with a bottle of Aquacote polyurethane topcoat. Put on 3 coats and board came up lovely.

Interesting! When did you get the board? I get the impression he tries to avoid chemicals where possible these days. Thanks for the help, I'll definitely keep polyurethane in mind.

I bought the surfie 18 months ago. I presumed that he was ok with the Aquacote because it is water based. Will send a pic of the board

poly varnish isn't going to want to go on an oiled board, if it was oil in the first place it will need a re-oil.

my surfie had a couple of coats of hemp oil put on it when I first got it. Most of the oil seemed to have soaked right into the wood and I didn’t have any problems when I applied the polyurethane. Guess every board will be different. Good luck.

I use Aluzene Epoxy Resin. But Marine Varnish is easier to use.

i like tung 50% and 50% citrus terpene which gives better penetration than tung oil on its own and your board will smell like citrus.., otherwise a gloss marine varnish will work fine. some luthiers get nice results using polymerised tung oil and lots of fine sanding/buffing/polishing but the ocean is not something they have to consider. Asking a woodworker or luthier forum might help.

these people in Oz make very good products https://gillysaustralia.com.au/ you could email them for advice? If it was my board I would pursue the tung option over marine varnish, the oil option is easier to achieve a good finish, varnish can be problematic. And it is less toxic
Carnauba and beeswax polishes can give a very shiny gloss and are compatible over tung oil finishes.. carnauba also gives a harder surface finishGILLYSAUSTRALIA.COM.AU
