It’s cool but kind of defeats purpose of riding waves. No

Sam Pa'e
hmmmm??.... can you clarify what part of this video defeats a purpose of me "riding a wave"....... I'm confused 😕
Glad you think it cool though 👍

Bill Wurts
The wave is still propelling the board? Less drag…

Bill Wurts AMEN 🙏

Northern Beaches
oh no, it’s a magical way to ride. There’s no noise like the board chattering over every ripple, and because the foil in underwater the ride is very smooth with no jumps and troughs. So in the end you get. Buttery smooth ride that’s faster than a surfboard and can last for several minutes. It creates a Better reason for surfing every wave.

Sam Pa'e
Northern Beaches......Thank you very much for this testimony. You now the feeling. I wish everyone could feel my sensation....AMEN 🙏🙏

There another aspect that revolutionary. That when your on a body board your pretty much stuck in the pocket of the wave and that's it. It's a one way trip. On the foil you have the ability to move around on the faces from one side to another. Hence lot of cut backs, tube time and even floaters off the top in each wave. There's so much more freedom to ride all over the wave. I just stay out of the white water. Foils don't fly smoothly in it. The flying part is transcendental on a spiritual level.

Northern Beaches
I saw the video in 2012? with Laird doing it in ski boots and I thought … I could design something like that for my local beach break. And I did, rode them and let some mates ride it too. Then posted it on Swaylocks and received very mild interest.
Then Kai came along and it all went wild, but for a few, it was old news.

The twin lateral foil is excellent for lift in smaller or flatter faces but it’s possible to design foils for steep, hollow waves so you can foil in the tube. This from a GoPro under the nose of my foil board.

Graham Butcher
did they work?

Northern Beaches
After seeing Laird do it with ski boots I made 2 lateral aluminium foils that were curved from rail to rail. I paddled into my first wave in 2012 and it rose up as I dropped down the wave, it was effortless, silent and fast. I took about 20 more waves with the same result so I made these foils in the pic above. With pretty much the same result so I flipped them over so they were concave with the tips pointing down. When I turned the tips held well but lost too much lift as they were at the wrong angle.
I made a dozen more twin lateral foils but learnt that this setup was very AOA sensitive and the board needed to be reinforced to keep a stable AOA on both foils.
The biggest change came when I made twin longitudinal foils, so a 24 inch long x 3 in wide aluminium foil running under each rail.

From your photo, it looks like you've discovered the fountain of youth. I've tried to see if you'd sent me a description of what's going on. I did however find a great Swaylocks quote from more than 10 years ago, I should send it to you rathe rthan post it here.

Bill Wurts
Looks like something a Sways member I know would create.

How’d it run?

Sam Pa'e
👎.....To much drag. Back to the drawing board

Richard Mendonca
More reasons to go surf. 🤙🏼

Ryan Johnson
Drawing Board is the Best part 🙌🏼🙏🏽👏🏼. Sure is Rad looking with the shorter piece on there!

Northern Beaches
Hi sam, what was the part that gave you Drag ?
Was it balancing the AOA of both foils ? Because the rest looks pretty good !

Sam Pa'e
the whole foil rig. Being it's short the foil will tend to left, breach, drop, and repeat. Now if I try to keep it from breaching, then the hole rig becomes a drag. I think best make the mast a bit longer so the deck just barely hovers above the water. Round two

ridden like this. It doesnt breach and drop.
NB18Marb.jpg
or ridden prone. In steep waves the out side of the foil is exposed so less lift.

I would like to see videos if possible.

Northern Beaches
if you search Vimeo for Surffoils there’s 6 or 8 videos.

Sam Pa'e
You have a link?

Northern Beaches
I did a lot of variations with long foils rather than lateral foils, but I did try lateral foils and found they were too sensitive on a steep face.

Sam Pa'e
Looks like you've been doing this for over 10yrs and that's awesome. Thanks for showing what you've been doing for years. Are you still doing it? Making boards and riding waves on a hydrofoil?.. Thinking I'm the only one doing this, but good to know I'm not the only trying.

Northern Beaches
the moment I saw Laird riding a foil with ski boots I thought Oh yeah I can make this work in the surf, like at a normal beach.
I posted on Swaylocks for years and it was only when Kai did it, then everyone said he was the first. I had neighbours say I saw some guy steal your foil idea but I told them it’s different.
Now still foiling on prone mainly because it’s such a buzz, but my foils are different and don’t need to be AOA specific.
It’s good to see you out there doing it too, there’s not enough of us.
Brett in Sydney, Australia.

Harry Alhadeff
That looks cool. Will it fly without the stabilizer?

Sam Pa'e
no...it will just do a up/down reaction 😆

Harry Alhadeff
I wish that girl from Ireland would post some pix of here tailless foil flying.

Sam Pa'e
message her....I would love to see it as well

Harry Alhadeff
Ok I asked her about her board. Lets see if she 's.

Thor Seraphin
Harry Alhadeff Iʻve talked with her. She is not making them right now but hopes to in the future. I will sell you my Trident T1 if you want, it might be what you are looking for. Very easy to control yet very easy to turn in smaller surf. Message me if interested.

Harry Alhadeff
Hey bro Yea Sam and I wonder how well that wing works for body board foiling. Ive been using Naish foils so far.

Jon Kwon
how does that Triton work and feel? Seems like it would be super loose w/o a tail stab? Only seen vids of kiters and wingers using the X-1 and T-1, but looks like it could work for boogie foil?

Sam Pa'e
...I tried this configuration. Results wasn't as great as I expected.

Thor Seraphin
Jon Kwon I have ridden other wings without the tail, very difficult. The Triton is intuitive and really easy to ride on small waves. Would be good for learning on or people interested in smaller waves. Feels playful. Does not give the length of ride or speed of traditional foils but takes less muscle to control and not as scary or dangerous as a high aspect wing.

Bill Wurts

oh yeh I remember Dave, he was a creative guy.

this guy was way ahead of his time. So many idea.....I love it

I am still doing it, here and there. This is an old pic of my wooden wing.

Daniel Nel
I love love love this. Would be cool for prone / disabled surfing.

Sam Pa'e
Nel YES!!....Been tinkering with this idea for a while now. Just need someone to step up. Willing to the stoke

Antonin D'voyage
Tho Mus ça te dirait d'aller rider une vague avec ce foil ? 😁

Cam Rawlinson
Looks like a morphed bathtub raceboat that had intercourse with a hammerhead shark or some god like foiler. .... Anyway, some neat innovations there.

how did it go any good?

Northern Beaches
check the vids, they are usually the first time testing them.

Sam Pa'e
looks awesome! I love seeing stuff like this. Home builds. Awesome Job👍

Northern Beaches
I nearly went into production making a foil kit that people would then install on their own craft. Seemed like a Good idea and then I realised most people would kill themselves with power tools and resin so I gave up on that idea !

Bob Green
I didn't surf it too many times. I've had a crook back for a while and I found my back was a bit unsupported when it was elevated. I would probably try a bit more volume next time. It's a learning curve I didn't stick at. Positioning to avoid nose diving and maintaining lateral stability were two challenges for me.Like anything, you have to put in the time.
