That thing is beautiful. I like the 5’4”.
What would you think about one that was 5’4”?

As the article above says, I tend to prefer small neutral buoyancy boards as these work well for the conditions I have. I've shaped/ridden 5' paipos and above, but for me its hard to paddle, and there's so much flotation and planning area, that is hard to get on steep waves, so you are limited to caching broken waves or whitewash. You could go for a 5'4, in my opinion and, that of many wooden surfboard shapers/surfers, you can always start with a slightly bigger board, and cut it down until you find yourself comfortable, the other way it's still possible but requires more work. That's just my opinion, and I can be wrong.

What's the construction?Solid wood with a layer of cork? You probably have access to better quality cork. The most recent board with cork has been like a cheesegrater.

MedSwells Surf
Yep, solid wood with a layer of cork, but I varnish the cork, since cork sucks a lot of water, and it accumulates it, so first day it weights a bit, the next day a bit more, and the moisture, ends up spoiling the cork. So I am careful to let the paipos dry by standing the paipo against a wall in a dry place, so gravity does its work and water ends in the floor not in the paipo

I like your fin positioning.

Thanks, it's a tip from a kneelo friend 🙂

Damian Coase
those kneelos😉

Those ply nubster side bites look amazing!
Do they provide more drive or are they just for stability?
I threw a set of longboard sidebites onto a standard 4' x 1' ply bellyboard here in the UK and I keep meaning to angle grind them down to something similar looking to the ones in your photo.

MedSwells Surf
Just for stability, I like the feeling of finles alaias, where the board is loose, so I was looking for a compromise between finless but just a bit of grab, to be able to hold a line.

Dave Pegg
that was my exact approach..... Fed up of sliding out sideways on the hollow ones and taking the lip on my back!
Thanks for your 🤙

i did the same thing on one of my bellyboards, perfect for hollow and powerful days! no more sideway slides and then more speed on the bottom turns!

nice what timber did you use and how thick

MedSwells Surf
wood plank is cut from paulownia timber, dims are about 48" x 15" x 3/4" but about dims, I tend to disregard them a bit, as they are so dependent on the skill, person, preferences, and wave type/day that I often find myself changing boards mid session 🙂
