I understand what you are saying. However, our bellyboards are part of our heritage here and have a different history.
For me, the difference between a wide board and a narrow board is the 'feeling'.
When I use paipos or bigger planing surfaces, it's much smoother yes, but the feeling is more akin to a bodyboard for me and your body is not as connected to the ocean. I kinda see the bellyboard as a elongated handplane of sorts, and really enjoy the sensation of feeling the ocean through my body. On a wider board where your body is on the board it feels way more disconnected. Its probably not a fast due to drag, for sure, but I enjoy the bellyboard more than any wide board that is skimming..

I find the English style bellyboard actually works best in lumpy crap surf, a gamechanger and fast as hell

They make for a great sledge on powder snow!
Pretty sure the Museum of British Surfing have one in their collection.

on water or snow?
I have a tatty old one at home, battle scars from snow use. Yet to get it wet.... must get it watertight and give it a go.
Will report back.

Yeah I was gonna say looks like a proper Wave sled

I sold one very recently. They go really well. Think they were made in Devon. You can get Tiki branded versions. Charlie Spurr would know.
Charlie Spurr
"Westcoast Flipper" were made with a fibreglass bottom and plywood top. They were made by Westcoast Plastics in Knowle (North Devon) during the early 1970's.
They are 47in long by 19in wide and have a double convex bottom.
Tiki made a similar design board around the same time, but with concave channels.
These boards are pretty rare as they were notorious for filling up with water. They also made great sledges for snow and the sand dunes!

thankyou Charlie

Nice bellyboard surf there, sweet lines. I just wonder if it wouldn't be even better with a slightly wider board (like 40cm for instance). Thanks for sharing !
Steven Halpin
no idea..I ride a lot of uk bellyboards at the standard width so thought I'd go just a bit wider. The boards trims and turns real well and has excellent hold
Bob Green
There is something cool about riding a simple piece of wood.
Steven Halpin
sure is..always puts s big smile in ya face
Ian Anderson
every tradesman needs a good straight edge to draw a clean line
Bob Green
So you've changed your mind about your next board.
Ian Anderson
no, but its a good thing to have a variety of tools and besides, the old master might just take pity on me next year and offer to shape that promised 2nd board which would put a new BB on the backburner.

Cant beat a plank of wood (all be it with some refinements )

That thing rips!

Someone's missing a cabinet door. And those waves aren't so crappy by everyone's standards.
Steven Halpin
pretty average for around herewe don't have world class waves but it's amazing how much fun you can squeeze out of onshore closeouts
John Morris
If I can get a drop, a turn with some acceleration and a clean pull-out through the lip, I don't need much more. At 72 I'm easy to please... usually.
Steven Halpin
right on..inspiring hope I'm still shredding at 72
Donald Walton
Looks super fun!

Very impressive!

A plank

By the way, what are the crossbars for ? Are they screwed or glued ?
Mark Little
they are glued on to make it look more authentic like the top of a wooden crate.
Jarrett Liu
This is how pioneers from many countries started riding a small wood plank. 🏝
