Paipo Gathering - Fall 2015?

Yes, we need a "paipo-palooza" , Paipo Camp out or something, so that we can all try out each others rides. Maybe this Fall, when we get some consistent surf? There's a nice group campground at Emma Wood State Park, Its literally at the mouth of the Ventura River, north of the point at C St. In the meantime, any time you're up in the Ventura area just let me know and I'll hook you up with a demo.

Let's plan it for when Krusher's coming over.

So huge nobody will go out or so muddy it looks like chunky chocolate milk or ?
During the 97-98 event they canceled a couple contests at Trestles because of all the rattlesnakes in the water who had been flushed out of their creek side dens.

I may be mistaken but I think the only group sites near Emma Wood are inland a bit?

In 97-98, the waves knocked off the end of the Ventura Pier! So yes, the conditions could be unmanageable. However, historical data indicates the months of January and February to be the height of the El Nino effect, both weather-wise and swell-wise. So I think the probability of unmanageable surf in November and early December will be low.

The group campground at Emma Wood is just over the RR tracks from the beach. Its a 50m walk to the beach. More importantly its rarely full, since only groups can camp there. There are a number of surf spots in the 15mi stretch between Emma Wood and Little Rincon to the north. Any other site suggestions?

I think we should find out how many people can make it, if only for a day. We also need to get some dates. I'll start a spread sheet. Lets keep the window between 11/15 & 12/15

This year could be a wild one, but I'm in and my vote is for.........................EL CAPITAN STATE PARK. This is a GREAT wave for all manner of paipo or alternative belly devices, excellent camping, easy to access, and close to a city if anybody needs anything (*though it won't feel that way when we're there...). Let's DO it...!

Only thing about El Cap...kind of fickle, isn't it? And if it's on and the weekend...well, there's no secrets any more. Not that going for the party wouldn't be enough!

El Cap is fickle. Maybe Jeff has a crystal ball.
Jalama? Secos?

Do we necessarily have to do a weekend meetup?

That late in the year may be getting a little wet and or chilly for camping, I vote for earlier (sorry Krusher) but if that is the vote I'll go with it.

Well, nobody certainly has a Crystal Ball 'this' far out? And yes, with this El Nino thing and the predicted heavy rains, an earlier date might indeed be the prudent move. The difficulty is always going to be: do we go to a location that PICKS UP SWELL, which might then be overloaded if we get any 'real' swell.............or do we got a place that RECEIVES BIG SWELL, and makes it ridable..............but would then be flat if nothing is pulsing through on our scheduled days? That's the conundrum? I vote for EC only because a) it's going to be an El Nino Fall and we should have a better than average chance of scoring something, and b) I'd like to concentrate on a quality wave as opposed to some funky beachbreak that is never even that good when it is good? Yes, EC can get busy, but on the in-between days, it's pretty uncrowded, and our paipo enthusiasts would be plenty stoked to be trimming down the point on even a 2-3' spinner, so it's got that going for it. And EC does have a big group site I believe, if not several of them, and there's a lot of other surf spots pretty close, so it's not like this choice is a one trick pony. Let the deliberations BEGIN!

Skiffs EC suggestion coupled with the Uncles mid week suggestion sounds a winner. Also better/prettier campground than Emma Wood which is a consolation prize if no swell. Nomas is right about better swell prospect Dec/Jan but Kage is right about chilly weather. Hmmmm.

Ultimately...it will probably be more about the people first, then the boards, then the waves...

The weather...nobody knows or can know. It could be 80 degrees or 58 degrees. SoCal is really off the rails as far as predictablity goes these days. Late November into early December is between the seasons of tropical and winter storms. Something usually comes through then and is gone. Roll them dice! Coastal camping here is more affected by wet, than cold or heat. So is water quality.

Rod and I went up to (California) Rincon one rainy Saturday morning during his working years...I couldn't even tell you what time of year that was. Rincon was tiny so in my mind that must have been sometime near summer, but the dark storminess seemed like winter. But winter storms mean surf, so...?

I could do mid-week as things stand now; alas, I'm in and out of the physical "penalty box" when it comes to getting wet in recent months. But if I'm free I'd come for the fun even if I couldn't get wet in the ocean.

Nels, that was in mid-July, when I had some work in Port Hueneme. Had to follow that up with some more work down in San Diego... made for a nice weekend drive down the coast to Santa Monica and show off some of the legendary sites to my co-workers.

Warm water, water air, sunny skies and clean water are all desirable. So are the waves, boards, people and Tomas's cases of chilled beers :) Growlers of Surf Brewery beers are also welcome!!

I like the weekdays, but maybe we should first agree to do these gatherings more often. Preferably somewhere with good access to rolled tacos with guacamole.
