Well I though it was about time I added a real wood paipo to the quiver, I'm headed for indo and a 2 week g-land trip in June so decided it was a chance to try something like this out in serious waves.

Got the a half blanks from Patrick at sawboards http://sawboards.bigcartel.com/product/ ... ered-patch

I have kept the design/dimensions in keeping with the foam and fibreglass boards I have been making so a direct comparison is easier.

41" /19"/1" (16" tail)

Put a little double concave through the back on the main single and angled on the tail blocks for comfort (rather than the usual full swallow tail)

Just need to add a leash plug and oil it! 8-)

Would like the brand my new logo on if I can get a brand made quick :o . Or anyone got any ideas/ways to put my logo on the board?

Pyrography.
A simple hand held soldering iron works well enough for basic work.

I think its about a 7 piece multi lay up, Patrick has snapped a couple but they always go down the grain not a joint. :?

Worst case, if you have sun, a magnifying glass+patience+steady hand will get you a logo!

Hi Keith, I like your design, if you can export your design as a PDF you could get a bronze brand made in Clunderwen. Link in the link http://sawboards.co.uk/blog/branding/ OOOPS that link does not work, try this one http://mbfinearts.co.uk He did mine and one for a friend of mine (also a wood worker) so its nothing he is not used to. You could always screen print it if you knew anybody with the kit.

Ride report:

Ended up doing my logo by getting a reverse decal as a mask and using black spray paint, almost went very wrong as the paint was leaching under the mask so I took the mask off with the paint still half dry, then hit it with some oi and wiped it around, luckily paint had soaked into the wood and the rest wiped off and diluted, giving a kinda aged look which i was happy with.

Did not get chance to ride the board till my indo trip to G-land, took it out on a smaller 3ft day to start with, very slow to paddle around on but very easy to duck dive deep so no drag back.

Soon found the (as i have been told here) board pushed out in front of you wave catching method works well with this board (never found it works with a paipo with volume)

The board with lack of rocker is very fast down the line, found with the lack of rail volume you cant surf off the rail boyancy-wise as I would with a foam paipo/bodyboard, and you have you keep your body out of the wave face or instant dag/stall. I found I needed to keep my hands/arms more inboard and ride off the bottom of the board rather than the rail.

After a few different sessions I got better at riding it, with my normal cutback and spins being possible, managed to also get a good 4ft clean barrel, just gotta keep that shoulder out of the wave face!

The concave to V from my foam paipo worked very well, and i could feel the thin rail working as a fin in the wave face, and found i could lift my legs on some wave and hold rail very easily.

I can see how people like the longer/straighter paipo to lift their legs and be faster due to less drag, but i feel for my surfing that would hinder manoeuvrability and be a more straight down the line design.

Will next be trying it out in some weak small welsh waves to see how that compares.

Surfed the board in knee high weak waves back here in wales, board goes well, catches waves easy and makes section, makes tiny waves fun!

There is a lot to be learned from these board from the lack of rocker and how that give you so much less friction and extra speed. 8-)
