Bodyboard Hydrofoil Video

Interesting footage. The foil seems huge to me ant unsuitable for the places I usually ride
(too many rocks, reefs).

Looks like a great way to shred the skin of your shinny-shin-shins...

While it's great to look at, mystifying to me how it actually works and works so well from what the vid shows (mostly because I just don't care), I'd hate to be "sharing" a peak with somebody on one. If somebody is looking for a commercial product future I would guess it will have to be at a wave park, somewhere controlled. I'm sure a rider would get a wide berth while in the water but I would heartily support close-quarters action on the beach or in the parking lot...

That might take a village or at least a committee ;)

I can't say I have ever tried it but I feel foiling is the one thing that isn't surfing at all, I don't know really what it is :?

As you are not planning on the hull of the board or using a rail it's just so different.

its looks very fast and really uses the wave energy efficiently, but it's kinda like racing a hover car around a race track without the friction interaction of tyres to the surface I think I would struggle to enjoy it.

Surfoils is the guy to ask about these. I tried one of the early prototypes and my crook back didn't appreciate it too much.

What I found interesting was the footage near the end where there were a couple of bigger waves. On one the ride was clipped, so presumably it wasn't a great ride and on another it looked like it was either tracking or harder to control. It's interesting to watch the flipper action as well.

Reefs and rocks and crowds - it would be a hazard. Even coming in on a thumping beachbreak.

Where I could see a real application is choppy surf - this would presumably remove the bounce effect and if the waves were a nice point break ruined by onshore winds, no problem - slice through it.

that thing has a huge wing span and depth if i read the dimensions correctly. Much prefer the idea of a smaller profile foil ala Gilbert Lum,

If this baby only cost a hundred bucks I would be buying it right now. I have to try this.

I started foiling after seeing Terry Hendricks’ patented foiling Paipo “Super Slicer”.

For more technical information about foiling...

And for a selection of videos shot from the front of prone craft while foiling....

I actually invented short board foiling back in 2010 posting images on Swaylocks and RealSurf forums in 2013. 3 years before Kai Lennys video. He made it famous but I did it first.
