MY PAIPO BOARDS
Five Decades of Paipos

Checkered Disk VIII
Background: The Checkered was built in December 2008, and I accepted delivery on March 7, 2009. It is a virtual clone of Flying Disk VII, except for shaving a 1/4 inch in the width and thickness for a nice tropical tuned waveriding board. The Checkered features a rounded wide square tail (the pod edges are very hard but not knife sharp).

Vital Statistics:

Length 50"  [total length of board]
Width 20"  [widest point of board, 25 inches from nose]
Mid point width 20"  [widest point of board, 25 inches from nose]
Nose 18"  [width 12" from nose]
Tail 18"  [width 12" from nose]
Pod 9 to 12"  [widest section of the tail, 0" for pintail, e.g., pt-to-pt for fish]
Flyers n/a  [distance from tail]
Thickness  2-3/8" [thickest part of board and general observation]
Rocker, nose 2-1/2"  [board flat on surface, vertical inches]
Rocker, tail 3/4" to 1"  [board flat on surface, vertical inches]
Weight 7.2 lbs (without fins)
Stringer(s) 1/8" balsa
Material construction: The boards was glassed with 2 layers of 6 oz. glass on the deck and one on the bottom with a half layer of 4 oz. on the bottom around the fins using silmar resin and Surfblanks America. The board has a polished finish.
Fin(-s) Three fins, thruster arrangement; Fins Unlimited center box with FCS side bites.
Rails Slimmer then my Orange Matter Flying Disk, eggy turned over forward and hard to the rear.
Glass job Double layer on the deck and a single layer on the bottom.
Designed by: Rod Rodgers
Shaped by: Austin Saunders, Austin Surfboards (Virginia Beach, VA)
Glassed by: Austin of Austin Surfboards
Builder Austin Saunders, Austin Surfboards (Virginia Beach, VA), #0xxxx. This was around number 80 in Austin's line of rodndtube-inspired paipos!
Notes:  This board is a virtual clone of my Orange Matter Flying Disk VII, except for being about 1/4" thinner and narrower. It is a joy to slide one's hands down her side and feel her contours. See pictures of the board here.
