Meco was one of a group of spearfishermen surfers from Cantabria in the 1960s. Besides being one of the early surfers in the area he was also behind the lens and has captured some of the few images available of early surfing images from northern Spain. Several of the images below can be found in the YouTube.com video clip, A Little Surfing Story by Meco. This interview which provides details about the photos is in both Spanish and English. The assistance of Salvador Artaza and Marlyn Souffront Tirado with translations in English and Spanish were much appreciated.

A Little Surfing Story by Meco.

1. When were planquins first ridden in Cantabria and who rode them?
The Cantabrian history began at the club CIS to which we belonged. We bought our spearfishing equipment in a shop called Godofredo in the year 1962-1963, and also saw in the shop planquins, which we used when the conditions were not suitable for fishing. We had not seen them before so we painted them and put on a keel to be able to edge the waves better.

We also used them in the snow without the keel (probably the precursor of the snow board in Spain). We rode the planquin for a year or more before we saw the first surfboard and Juan Giribte made a wood board and we learned that they were sold by Barland-Rott in Biarritz. It was in 1964, and we quickly drove our car [to buy] a surfboard. This is more or less the history of the planquin in Cantabria

What does CIS stand for?
Our club, the CIS (underwater research center), disappeared but the building is still there.

An old photo of the building (on the car is the surfboard made by Giribet that we used for surfing and skiing in the snow). We were going to the snow and the building today.

2. The photo of Lolis and Antonio Sáez.
In my video, A Little Surfing Story by Meco, as you can see at 12 seconds, appears the photo that I took of Lolis and A. Saez at the beach of Sardinero. The red and black coloured planquin is mine and the blue one is Lolis'. The wetsuits are 1960's Nemrod brand.

3. Who is in this photo?
In the video at 1.31, was in 1964, at Laredo (Cantabria) from left to right - Adolfo with a wooden board that his father made, Meco and Giribet with the Barland-Rot brought from Biarritz, Maruri with the second board brought to Cantabria and at the end appears a planquin. Rafael Molina, was still riding the planquin at the time because they thought that he was to old (40-years-old) to try to surf. He also painted the board and added a keel. Today the people in the photograph are between 70 and 80 years of age.

Video @ 1,31.

5. Who made or sold the boards?
Godofredo's store is still in the same place and sells everything related to fishing, rods, wetsuits, clothing, etc. Godofredos store is on Paseo de Pereda, Santander, facing the bay. The planquis of 1962 were likely brought from France.

Is Godofredo still around? I wanted to confirm whether the boards were made in Cantabria?

Godofredo is the name of the store where we bought the planquin. The owner died last year. I do not know whether the planquin were brought from Vizcaya or France.

6. Who is in this photo?

Laredo Road. The Giribet wooden board before shortening as planquin. Rafael Molina is 3rd from the left.

7. Were planquins still being surfed in the 1980s?
You do not see the wooden planquins like ours anymore, so if they appeared around 1980, they were the foam paipos.
