This appeared on Joe Tabler's weekly Surf Blurb eMail, compliments of Allen Kukel. The book was on eBay. Apparently the book has many illustrations. Any more paipo boarding do ya think?

I favor the outfit of the paipo guy "no pants - no problem". I didn't even notice the second guy in the outrigger.

Haole tourist Rollo wearing a straw hat and "surfboating" with a local beachboy steering in the back...Diamond Head in the background. We see this tourist canoe ride a lot in the old films of Waikiki on YouTube.

Here's a postcard I got recently on Ebay. We've seen similar versions before, and there are two versions http://mypaipoboards.org/postcards/Paip ... ards.shtml currently in the postcard section of Rod's Paipo Pages. Yes, Rod...I'll get you a better scan of the front and back. For now I just have the Ebay photo. A couple of things make this card interesting. It's clearly postmarked April 1907 on the back, and that's earlier than the examples currently on our postcard pages. 1907 is one year before the Rollo book was published. Plus the sender wrote about what was in the picture, and that's not always the case with postcards. The handwritten text reads:

Honolulu, April. Another type of surfboating__virtually Nates coasting on boards. M.
Notice the use of the word "coasting" as in wave coasting. Plus the slang "Nates" for the locals. At least the writer had enough respect to spell it with a capital letter.
P.S. This card was mailed to Newton, New Jersey. One can only wonder what impact that might have had on the East coast beach rental business.

When this book came up on Surf Blurb, I noticed that it was already listed on the Paipo Biblio in the "to be obtained" section. Good job guys.

I added the Rollo book to the "to be obtained" list after seeing it in Joe Tabler's Surf Blurb. The book is not widely available but I will check to see if the Surfing Heritage Foundation has it. It is odd that a cluster of four universities have it in the collections in three Midwest states (Illinois, Indiana and Ohio). It is also at the Library of Congress, off-site collection, so maybe one day during the summer I will make arrangements to check it out.

No, I have not queried anyone.

The book came in on loan from the Library of Congress. My guess is that this book is the first ever publication (magazine, journal or book) to feature a paipo rider on the cover. More info here: http://mypaipoboards.org/pubs/BookSumma ... ml#Nodaway
