'Yum Yum Yellow'....I love it how the Navy comes up with these various 'shark repellant colors' over the years..........and then MORE years down the line, it turns out that instead, they were probably attractants.

Thought I'd post up a few photos of a buddy's board, he was by earlier today enroute to the ding guy with it. It's not a Mega Platter...... so what's it doing on this thread? Well...............I thought it might be more 'comfortable' for some of you to see a board more this size. This board is in absolutely perfect condition (except for that small ding.......though it's over 15 years old. We used to get all of our boards shaped by by local SLO County wizard Dave Parmenter, and this was one of several belly devices that Dave carved out for us.

This one is 4' 8" long by 23" wide. There's more rocker dims, thicknesses, and all that written on the blank, but them's the basics. The photos tell the rest of the story; check it out-

Here's the one last photo.

Steve 'started out' with these dims as it was sort of what he remembered from his youth, riding belly blasters in the hollow shorepound of long ago Seal Beach. He said EVERY SINGLE KID HE KNEW had a bellyboard and that was just 'their' thing. He's now onto larger boards (but not MP sized...), and he keeps this one around to lend out and as a sort of remembrance of his youth. Dave did a beautiful job on it as he always did, and Greg Martz gave it a beautiful glass job.

Really nice! Dave Parmenter is one of my shaping "heroes". I just built a LB semi-gun based almost entirely on his description of one that was posted on Surfline many years ago ("Anatomy of a Surfboard"-D.Parmenter) That board looks like its really fast.

Interesting that you've been riding an asymmetric fin set-up on a non-asymmetric board. What difference do you notice in the ride compared to having all 4 fins in. Also goes to show there's a lot to learn about what works.

How big are the Parmeter fins on the blue board? The rails look a bit more parallel than the red board or is that just my eyesight?

Bob- Yes, moving the fins around to create an asymmetrical was just the cheap way to begin the experiment. With pad, drive to Santa Cruz to pick the board up, and everything, the MP's are close to $800+, so before I invested that kind of money I had to know that this would be a worthwhile avenue to go down. What difference in the ride did I notice? Simple: it did everything better. EVERYTHING. The board was faster, looser off the bottom and way looser off the top, and in short, the feeling was so noticeable that I figured the money for a template asymm would be worth it, so I'm pursuing that. I was riding my current board last week at a nice little isolated point break, and I was easily flipping the board sideways and side-slipping it in the pocket at will, and then re-connecting the board and continuing down the line. I can do that with the full complement of quads on the bottom, but it's much harder.....so I was having some fun with that aspect of 'less' fins on the bottom.

Not sure how big the fins were on the old Parmenter, like I said, this was over 15 years ago, maybe 20...? And yes, the rails WOULD be more parallel than the red board, as the red board is more classically Dextra-sized, at 4-8, and the green one I believe was 5-6.

I know these boards/fin set ups are made for surfing one way - have you in a wild moment tried the asymmetrical fin set up on the non-dominant side?

I think what he means is, have you tried going left on your board with the asymmetric fin set up you are using for rights.

Nice little swell these last few days....Had the 'asymm' fin setup on the standard M. Platter, good day for some experimentation in anticipation of the new board delivery...
