New Paipo Board Build
Here are some photos of my latest board. It is 48" x 21" x 2". I will be adding a 5/16" Cove pad. So it will be about 2 1/4" when done. It was supposed to have a round nose and be 48", but the foam was damaged.
You can put 5 attachments per post. So look at the next one to see more.
All drawn out on 3" 2 pound EPS foam. Cut out with edges squared With the rocker shaped 2 1/2' front 3/8" rear. Next I planed the thickness down about an inch and cut out the top and bottom rail bands ---Now It Is Finally Looking Like Something. You can put 5 attachments per post. So look at the next one to see more.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Now it is almost done. I have smooth it out a little and put the concave on the bottom. Hopefully by this weekend I will have sealed it with microballons and epoxy and then laminated the top and bottom. After my last board I swore that I would never glass another board. But I have been a little broke after paying the last of son's college expenses and I have just enough Super Sap epoxy for one more board. Can't let it go to waste.

Yes, very nice. Finned, or finless?

Yes, Fins. Fins, Fins, Fins. I love fins. I will be a twin fin. That is my current addiction. I originally envisioned thinner rails. But I kept them a little fuller, because it is only about 2 " thick.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Very cool
Its pretty similar to what i'm going to go for on my next shape. What inspired the outline and wide point way up forward?
I really like the swallow/V tails, the back corners seems to be a very nice pin tails to turn off
What concave/s are you going for?

Re: New Paipo Board Build
I made this one similar to my favorite body board. I tend to ride the forward edge of most my boards. This is sort of a curiosity board. I like a longer board, but I think this will be good for a local break that tends to close out alot and all for junky summer surf. However I you could ride it in any surf small or large.

Here are some photos of my build: This is picture the top being sealed with epoxy and Microballons
. Now I have sealed both sides and I have the FCS Fusion fin boxes in and have laminated the bottom with 2 layers of 6 oz cloth. Here I have taped off the bottom so I can do cut laps -

Here is a view of the top tale after lamination with the leash plug in. I put the leash in the middle this time. I always have had it on the the corner, because I thought it would gouge my wetsuit in the center. But I am hoping that with leash in the middle the board will pull through the water. when being dragged or pulled.
This is a shot of the bottom with the Hot Coat. I did the top too. -

Looking good. Is that bevel you got going on the bottom?

What was the thinking on double 6oz on the bottom, that a lot more than I have usually heard of.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
We'll see how it goes with double 6 oz. My last two boards had triple 4 oz on both sides and it worked great. I have no stringer so I have added some more glass on theses boards. On my next board I might try a one 4 oz and one 6 oz top and bottom or even double 4 oz. It seems like the double 6 oz took more resin than the triple 4 oz even though they both add up to the same thickness. One thing is for sure my new board will be virtually indestructable. It will probably test it out in a week.

I also favor a heavier glass coat regimen so the board(s) can better withstand the abuse in the travel lanes (airlines, cars, etc.).krusher74 wrote:What was the thinking on double 6oz on the bottom, that a lot more than I have usually heard of.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Krusher,
My board would have had 2 x 6oz . I've had boards with 3 x 6oz. The NoFins had 2 x 10oz. Board longevity and handling chop are two positives of a heavier glass job.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Here is my board after putting a gloss coat on both sides.
It is more of a cheater coat to fill in all my glassing imperfections. I hated to sand it down. This is the board sanding down with 220, 400, 600 and 1000 wetsand. Tonight I'll polish it a Little. I kind of like the sanded look, but I bought a new type of surfboard. So I guess I'll polish it. And this weekend I'll test it out. I designed to have a Cove Pad. But I'll ride it first without a pad.-

Re: New Paipo Board Build
I know that this is kind of a long thread, but I thought someone might want to see how build my boards. Here it is after polishing with Surfboard Polish #2 from Fiberglass Hawaii.
I rode it this weekend and it performed better than expected. I was a little worried because I kept the rails a little thick. But it rode great. I enjoyed having the wide point forward and shorter than my usual boards. I was able to drop in on some fast steep Ocean Beach waves without any tendency to pearl the nose. It is very nimble and muscular kind of like a powerful sports car. I got my cove pad last night and I will put it on and try it again. Hopefully the pad won't add too much float.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Nice seeing the entire evolution. Board seems sized right and hopefully the cove pad doesn't add too much float--for the sake of duck diving those Ocean Beach (SF) waves--on the other hand you probably are wearing a fair amount of rubber.

Re: New Paipo Board Build
Glad to hear the board is riding well.
It very similar to what I ride (except for fined) and your description of a shorter board mirrors how I feel they ride.
It must be very fast being wide and flat. I;m going more tha way for my next board as "fish type" paipo
Would be interesting to see if it works finless.
