The next big thing
Surfing World is an Australian surfing magazine first published in the 1960s. It was a dominant mag for a while, almost folded and has had a bit of a resurgence in recent years, with a retro type feel. The latest issue (#322) has a page on David Rastovich, who has been riding glassed boogie boards with fins added, in Hawaii. 4'6 x 23' - he says "It looks like an old paipo and similar to the single fin Ted Spencer was riding at Angourie in Morning of the Earth". The article goes on to say: "Dave always has a new thing, some improbable craft in his quiver...".
A while back, someone said paipo would only become popular if pros started riding and getting photographed on them. This is one step closer.
I posted Rod the article and an earlier article which includes a piece on Rastovich riding an old bellyboard stand-up.

NO POOFTERS!
NO POOFTERS!
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.

Re: The next big thing
I tend to agree about not seeing a need to "popularize" anymore surf riding -- it is already crowded enough!!! Did enjoy skimming the article on the flight down to PR. Will look it over closer and post to the website in a couple of days... when the surf in Puerto Rico goes for flat for a few.

There was a certain irony about my post which seems to have been lost.
Uncle G, thanks I now know why my sleep is so rooted. It's that pineal gland. Uncle G, also appreciates some Australian humour.

Re: The next big thing
Rasta is jumping on the bandwagon a little late.
The US have dibs on the game.
http://bingsurf.com/surfboards_speedsquare
There's a You tube video on there too.
Looks just like/my gst looks just like: the speed square.
I've tried riding my 4'2" standing up.
It's challenging but to be honest I have much more fun riding it prone as it was designed to be ridden and ride my regular surfboards standing up as they were designed to do.
Sure the speed square is shaped to be ridden specifically standing up.
The Morey catch black ball beater type boards were another cross over skim/prone/standing up craft but I'm fairly certain we're all aware of them already.

Re: The next big thing
These sorts of boards are being ridden by competent surfers. Most guys would struggle to catch waves on them and being willing to return to the bottom of the pecking order is a different story again.
As I mentioned there is an irony to all this, being something new.

Re: The next big thing
All around the article does well until it crumbles into some of the all too customary characterizations,
Some good historical nuggets and a nice collection of boards are shown on p. 26.
The paipo article can be found here:
http://mypaipoboards.org/mags/magazines ... ngboarding
- "... a special emotional moment for all that had Chris quietly pondering whether he could have been a stand-up surfer after all."
- "... the first surfcraft for many, and a developmental link in an ongoing historical progression that now seems to he embracing all aspects of its past."

I didn't see any such boards on his site but he does offer good surfing advice: "Most importantly though, be good to one another in the water. We are all out there to do the same thing."

Re: The next big thing
This isn't too much larger than a paipo, I think rasta would sign and ride this if there was some coin in it for him.

The two recent surf magazine articles submitted by Bob Green are located in the MyPaipoBoards magazine webpage, at: http://mypaipoboards.org/mags/magazines.shtml. Look for: Australian Longboarding Magazine and Surfing World.

Re: The next big thing
That board Rasta has is very similar to my gst although my board has a deep double concave bottom.
Interesting.
